Has anyone any knowledge of or seen any references to my ancestor,
William Pattle .........?
...Philip Woodruff mentions Thomas (but not William) in both volumes of
'The Men Who Ruled India' (Cape, 1953) and lists several contemporary
journals, memoirs and other references which might be helpful.
Have you tried major biographical dictionaries, the DNB and Boas, for
example? What about his Regimental records?
Try newspapers - Times, Daily Telegraph, Daily News, Morning Post, The
London Illustrated News (which often included portrait sketches) and The
Gentleman's Magazine for obituaries. Was he in the Crimea? Those dates:
1854/1856 would suggest that he was...newspapers again. (Russell of The
times might have known him). If he was Q. Victoria's ADC he would have
enjoyed a well-documented send-off. You don't give a date of death, btw,
but he seems to have lived to a great age.
There must be a whole lot of material somewhere! Did he write his memoirs?
Who and where are his direct descendants? Could they have journals,
letters or other relevant material?
