Several weeks ago I posted an inquiry re an Indian adoption. I had some helpful replies
which lead to more questions and more answers so I shall lay out my inquiry afresh with
hopes that I can get some of your excellent assistance.
An elderley friend of mine was b. in Eden Maternity Home, Calcutta on 28 March 1917
Her b. mother was Caroline Munroe, Her father ? unknown. The baby was named Cecilia
Munroe and was placed in St Vincents Home, Khiddapore, Calcutta. At the age of six weeks
Cecilia was adopted by Ethel Mary O'Connor (nee Watson) and Joseph S. O'Connor.
The baby was then named Eileen Maude O'Connor. Eileen later went to school in
Her adoptive Mother Ethel d. when Eileen was 12 years old.
Eileen believes that her b. Mother died. That her natural father d. in "the
Her "papers" were lost or mislaid after her adoptive Mothers death.
She wants to know about her birth parents.
Eillen married in Madras in 1939 and has since lived in New Zealand and Australia.
Her adoptive mother's family where Watsons and her grandfather was a dentist in India
his family had hailed from Edinburgh originally (?) Her grandmother Dentist
Watson's wife was Portuguese.
She is also interested in making contact with the "Watsons.
OK what is the easiest way to track the adoption?
This is my first attempt at looking at Anglo Indian genealogy. I have a son who will be
in India soon so if anything can be done "easily" there I would like to have
the knowledge asap.
Well thank you to Di in Melbourne, if you are reading this you will see I have more info.
Eileen rang me from Australia earlier this week.
Thank you all for your time - it can be rewarding to assist older people in their search
even if it is getting "a bit late in the day".
