The marriage below took place in 1894, when Hector McKinnon was still in the
Army. If John looks at the full marriage record it should show the groom's
occupation, which should enable John to decide whether he has the "right"

the FIBIS Fibiwiki page FamilySearch Centres which is relevant if access to
the British Library, which hold the original records, is not possible.
As Hector McKinnon would have been eligible for a pension he may be in the
WO 97 records available on Find My Past' If not there, which is possible as
he was discharged in India, as he was Royal Artillery he may be in the WO
(see Section 4.1.2) These
records may show marriage and children.
(see Section 3.4) For
a discharge in 1899, it is my understanding that these records are only
available at the National Archives at Kew. These records would be unlikely
to show any details of wife or child, however.
