I agree - a fantastic resource but not very user friendly.
I have spent some time looking at the Bengal Directory for 1851 and have the following
I have used reader 1. I have browsed in "txt" view which is much easier to
read, (but the optical character recognition is quite poor). But at least it is of a
reasonable size. When I have found something of interest, I have switched the view to
"rtf" which appears on screen more like the original (I think), if a bit
garbled. You can then highlight the text and copy into a Word document, and reformat for
size and font and spacing.
To navigate the pages enter the page number you want and press "Enter" on your
keyboard. Don't use the arrow keys on screen which will just take you forward or back
one page at a time.
Hope this helps - it works for me.
Can I add my thanks to Maureen too, for this and all the wonderful information she passes
on to the rest of us.

Subject: Re: [INDIA] Directories online. Digital Library of India website
you deserve an award for your eagle-eyed ferreting out of these books. It is a shame
therefore that it is such a difficult site to use.
I would like to know whether I am the only one who has extreme difficulty reading them
because of the size of the print. The HTML version is easier on the eyes, but is
inevitably garbled, so is harder on the brain. Does anyone know of a way to obtain clearer
versions of these books?
Also has anyone resolved the navigation issues? It is impossible to enter a page number to
navigate to, so the only way to get to page number 1056 is to click the forward arrow at
least 1056 times.
One book I tried to get to this morning - Madras Almanac and Compendium Intelligence for
1859, if you follow the link you get taken to an Annual Register for 1932, so as well as
the above issues there are also cataloguing errors.
thanks for your efforts though, hopefully one day the site will become more
