My father was with the army in India, etc., between 1942 and the end of 1945 and I have
very clear memories as a young child during those years of visiting the Army & Navy
Stores on Victoria Street, London with my mother to collect the occasional food parcel.
These invariably contained a large, plain tin of very tart marmalade and another of
rather unpleasant butter At the time I thought they were of Indian manufacture and had
in fact come all the way from India. Is this possible? Surely with shipping being so
scarce during the war space would not have been given to such non essentials.
Does anyone else in their eighties or older have similar memories?
