Following my posting on James Barton's voyage to India in 1811, it has become apparent that Tony Fuller has come up with some very interesting material on shipping in this period. This has in turn opened up further avenues.
A distant "cousin" of mine then wrote: -
That is an AMAZING amount of detail Tony Fuller has come up with- it is so
interesting. But also daunting when I think of the time involved in trying
to follow up all his suggested leads. But I'm so impressed by his
Re the ship, and JB's batch, I've attached 2 pages from Spring; the notes

I am certain in my own mind that Dr H was the half brother of James B's
mother Dorothy Ann Nowell: DAN's mother was Dorothy Ann Sole, m. first
Thomas Nowell(also confusingly referred to in Ancestral File/IGI as Roger,
who was his brother) m. second Charles Heathcote, their son being Charles
Thomas - Dr H. Note his ref to 'for you dear mother's sake'(or similar
phrase) in his 1811 letter to James.
This seems to be how Heathcotes and Bartons first became linked, a link
continued by inter-marriage(besides Cockshutt and Eliza Georgiana) in subsequent
I think what I had better do is copy my Heathcote and Barton trees onto CD
and send them to you (they include a lot of Notes). They are not very tidy
and are being added to all the time, but would help set my conjectures out
for your consideration. Some of my data is drawn only from the IGI, and
needs to be checked against Parish Regs etc, BUT it is corroborated by all
the little scraps of info I've gathered from PB's notes."
Does anybody know anything about Dr Heathcotes school in Hackney?
Or the ship "Henry Addington".
I am writing on behalf of my 'aunt'. Her grandfather was John WARD born
1864 in Burnley, a cotton weaver by profession. His parents were Henry
(a clogger) and Alice (nee Taylor), Alice passing away between 1877 and
1881. In 1881 they were living at 46 Hull Street, Burnley.
She is most intrigued in the history of one of his brothers. She
believes that either Fred born 1863 or Albert born 1874 was a 'governor'
of one of the tea plantations in India (she believes it could have been
Madras, though as she says she is not sure). She has been shown
pictures, though everything is 'hush hush', and nothing has ever been
mentioned about him.
She also believes that her grandfather had a brother Jabez and a sister
Margaret, these I have not been able to locate. However I have found
that my 'aunts' grandfather had several brothers apart from Fred and
Albert, these were John, born 1865, William born 1867, Amos born 1876,
and Arthur born 1869, there was also two sisters Sarah E born 1870 and
Maude born 1877.
The DAVIDSONs of Skipton were related to this family, John Davidson born
1865 was a Joiners Apprentice, a nephew, and was living with them.
Any help is greatly appreciated, and will be passed onto my 'aunt'.

Pat Page - and others interested,
I don't know how much time you have but your listing of ships is formidable
and most useful. ( I imagine that the numbers after the ships' names are the
folio number - ?). This seems to have been taken from the film with OIOC
For those interested, I have established a database of Embarkations for EIC
Army European Recruits from 1824-1829.
The data include:
Name of Ship
Date of Departure
Destination (Bengal, Bombay, Madras or St. Helena)
Date of Arrival
Number of Recruits
Number of Wives
Number of Children
This is taken from L/MIL/9/77 or L/MIL/9/100 (The two seem to overlap) - I'm
sorry that I am not familiar with the LDS film numbers.
So, Pat if you could spare the time to provide the same data (probably with
extra destinations) from your film, these would be useful extensions of each
In fact, I also have similar data for the year 1786 (from L/MIL/9/91) and
for 1800 (L/MIL/9/97), although only 15 ships are included in the latter and
no destinations given.
If any lister would like any look-ups, please let me know. Please bear in
mind, however, no soldiers names are included. To copy these really would be
a Marathon task.

Has anyone the time to look something up for me the next time they are in British Library??
I have been trying to trace the birth of Eugene LECUN...probably Akyab,1873 or even his parents marriage there. His father was Auguste.
I can do this for you. It will take some time as I have limited access
to the film. Unfortunately, these lists only give the military
personnel and do not indicate whether families accompanied the men. The
information given is name (some of the officers have the rank included),
former occupation, place of birth, date of attestation, age, and there
is a column for notes, but I didn't see anything entered here. Some of
the lists have at the end the date of arrival and place but these are
inconsistant. No place of departure is mentioned or regiment. Some of
them are divided into Infantry and Artillery, but not all of them.
I'll get back to you when I have more information to supply.

the following from Atkinson's "Himalayan Gazeteer", originally 1882,
reprinted 1973 by Delhi Cosmo Publications (I've read two sessions
worth at Albury history centre on LDS film, now have to wait till end
of Jan. to read some more) offers something curious and re-inforces my
reaction to Sylvia's story of the 75 children of the Rajah in a
tumbledown courtyard - i.e. thank God for a father who could recognise
73 out of 75 kids as being his own !! The love and attention that
implied would more than make up for being one of many impoverished,
unknown and unrecognised Princesses !!! I expect if the Brits
acknowledged the huge direct and indirect German relations of our royal
family, let alone Greek, we might also feel bewildered at royal
Anyway, from the Gazeteer:

Female infanticide has been rife in the Gangetic Districts of Upper
India, due to the disgrace supposed to be attached to the expression

the marriage of a daughter. "
Isn't that extraordinary ? Can anyone shed some light on this disgrace
reg. father-in-law ? Agog and intrigued, from today cool northern

C.Butler Esq., 4th son of the late James Blake Butler Esq., youngest
daughter of Dr.Myles B.O'Brien, of Newcastle West, Co.Limerick.
Has anyone any idea on finding more on this couple as he doesn't seem to
have been a soldier ???
I am new to this list and genealogy in India. I have a Robert HARD who
was born in Endore, 1860, father Robert a Barrack Master. How do I go
about finding a marriage for his parents?
Good to see that people use the list archives! The following is a list of
> Calcutta & surrounds Chuches from Scott & Cos 1844 Bengal Directory (I
> provide names of personnel - chaplains/clerks/organists etc on request.
> Most of the RC ones only have name of the Vicar): [list followed]
Now I'm confused! This earlier list doesn't mention the St. Thomas's RC in
MIddleton St., mentioned in the 1864 list, but gives a St. Thomas's in
Howrah which sounds like the one I want. And that one isn't on the 1864
list???? Could it have moved, and if so when? or are there 3 St.
Thomas's. It might help me because I don't have an exact date for the
marriage I am investigating since it is an official copy taken by hand in
1886. I have a record of a child born in 1882 (Again by searching the
archives and finding a list sent round a couple of years ago by Sylvia.) so
the marriage took place before that (presumably!) However the copy gives
the brides age at marriage as 20, so I could then find her birth Cert. more
easily. Sylvia, could you let me have the names of the personnel at the
two St. Thomas's - there's a slight possibility that the chaplain might be
the same as the names on my certificate? Thanks.
Is there anyone who can tell me where I can get information regarding a
government steamer called the Dolphin. My great great grandfather, i.e.
James William Ballantine, was Captain or Commander of it in 1884 (according
to the baptism records of two of his sons by his second wife) and I would
really like to know more about it and which routes it would have sailed. He
was living in Akyab, Burma at the time (where he also died in 1886). Is
there also someone who can point me in the right direction with trying to
find some more baptism and marriage records for Burma. In particular, I
would like to find the marriage record for his second marriage to a certain
Mah Hla who I assume must have been Burmese if her name is anything to go
on. Ive tried the OIOC, and although I did find several baptism, marriage
and burial records relating to my family, I seem to have hit a brick wall in
going further back. If there is anyone who has connections with the
following people in U.K., Burma or India, then please contact me:
HELEN EDEN BALLANTINE nee ?
MAH HLA BALLANTINE nee ?
MURIAL KATE BALLANTINE or CHARLES ALEXANDER ROSNER (HER SPOUSE)
ALAN JAMES BALLANTINE or HELEN HANNAH JAMES (HIS SPOUSE)
CONSTANCE IVY PHYLLIS BALLANTINE or ALLAN ARCHER BALLANTYNE (HER SPOUSE)
CONSTANCE GRACE BALLANTINE or HERBERT RICHARD BISHOP (HER SPOUSE)

Brough Waddell. I have now found out that the firm he worked for Landale &

assessors and salvage contractors. In 1921 J B Waddell was an assistant.
Can SKS advise me as to whether the firm is still at this address and is

Last year I extracted a list of names of those men who enlisted in WW1 in
Australia who had stated that they had been born in India. There were no
names starting with D or F, these have now been added to the database and
more names starting with C, E and G have also been added.
Cathy Day has put the original list of names on her web page and has added
additional information. I hope she will find the time to add these also.
There are 104 more names plus the names of their Next of Kin.

Further to my reply to your query I phoned my brother who is two years older than I am. He also remembers your grandfather? but said he was called Doctor Slade. he was unable to supply any further info.

As a matter of interest. HEIS Dorsetshire plays a bit part in Patrick O'Brian's novel HMS Surprise; appearing in a scene beginning on page 304.
Re your enquiry about James Slade. I was born in Pallavaram in 1933 and can remember a Slade who lived there. He was friendly with my parents and I have today photographs taken by him with a small camera of my little sister. I also remember that he had a wireless - a very rare item in the village ay that time. I do not believe there was a Mrs Slade.
