Jeff & List,
Where is Matthews?
Would you share what you have on Muncie Glass Works? I'm trying to place one
called Patterson Glass Works but have, as yet, been
unable to detect any indication that it ever existed.
My great grandfather, Robert I Patterson, invented the snap jar closure and had a small
canning jar company called Patterson
Glass Works. I don't know much of the history of this company but have in my
possession his original drawings and the patent on
this closure. When he died, one of the brothers of a now large glass company came to my
ggrandmother and told her that they would
run the company for her "if she would just sign these papers." That was the end
of that as she had unknowingly signed over the
company and she and her kids had to mortgage the family home numerous times to eat. At
least that's the story that came down
through the family. I went through the Ball museum a few years ago and there is no
mention of Patterson Glass Works but that may
be normal. I've never seen it mentioned in any of the history books on Muncie.
Patterson Glass Works seems to have slipped into
the binding of all the history books¿ If you talk to a serious glass jar dealer though,
they've heard of it.
I grew up on W. Ivy Street which ran up to and ended at the back of an old brick
factory bldg on the west side. Neighborhood
kids got into much trouble throwing rocks through the windows of the empty bldg and it
stood like that all those years. It wasn't
torn down until a short while before the big Marsh store was built at Tillotson and River
Road. That's the rest of the story.
I was once told family thought it might be the location of the old Patterson Glass
Works but no one ever knew. If someone knows
how to research titles, etc. I'd love to learn. Perhaps we could also locate the one
Jeff is looking for. Muncie seems to have
been riddled with glass companies. Any help would be appreciated...clues are gratefully
accepted.

Subject: [INDELAWA-L] Muncie Glass Works
Does anyone out there have info on the Muncie Glass Works factory? In 1900
both my Grandparents were found working at Muncie Glass Works. I would like
to know more about it. What the factory looked like if there is any old
photos left somewhere? What all they made and mostly what it was like there
in 1900. I want to give my family tree book more than a name and a date, I
would like to make it as personal to each person in it as I can. Any help
you can give would help me out, there isnt a lot about it on the web and
what I have found was after the factory was sold. I do know it wasnt far
from the covered bridge there in Mathews In from what Ive been told?? Thank
you. ..Jeff Bright
