Boy, Cathy, if someone has the answer to this, I'd love to know. The army lost my gg
grandfather's body. They suspect he's in a
mass grave in or near Jeffersonville but don't really seem to know. BAD...really
upsets us that no one seems to know what they did
with him.
One research librarian suggested I find the company that made his headstone and see where
they shipped it.

Does anyone know the rules (if any) for burying the Civil War dead. I have
found some ancestors who were sent home for burial, some where buried in
mass graves, and some were individually buried.
How was this decided? Who decided?
