Hi Gary,
I'm sending this also to the Delaware list because Flummers lived in
Delaware Co in Union Twp. It was Hummers who lived in Blackford Co, and
they were a whole separate family. When Sarah Flummer and Abel Geyer left
their neighboring farms in Union Twp and got a marriage license in nearby
Hartford City, Sarah very clearly wrote her name as Flummer. Her name was
misread when their marriage licence was included in a Blackford marriage
index, so the error perpetuates today. I try to get that correction on the
web whenever I can.
I have talked with Jim Curtis <dom57(a)skyenet.net> in the past. He's much
more informed about Jacob and Susan who lived in Grant County than I
am. If I were you, I would go back and study Grant Co records to see what
you can learn about Jacob and Susan and when they moved on to IA. Or if
they moved there directly.
I have looked for a will for John Flummer in Delaware Co and haven't found
it. I don't think there was one. Instead, John made out a deed to two of
his sons, written 25 Nov 1843 and in deed book 8 p 185, Delaware Co. He
gave (as John Flummer Sr) to John Flummer and Jacob Flummer the E1/2NW1/4
S17 T22N R10E, recorded 3 Apr 1844. This granted the land to John and
Jacob for $1.00 @ labor during the lifetime of their mother
Sophronia. This is a synopsis, and I need to get the deed copy. There was
a mention also of Susan Flummer, Wm Flummer, Abraham Seymer/Zemer and wife
Mary Magdelene, Abraham Abel Geer(Geyer) and wife Mariah Sarah, and the
heirs of Elizabeth Flummer, decd. This is one way that land owners settled
their affairs in their old age without leaving a will to go through
probate. And you can see that I need to get the original copied from
microfilm in Delaware Co.
Since this all happened very early, we may not learn when John Sr and
Saphronia died or where they were buried. I think someone wrote me that
Saphronia actually died first, and John may have moved on. Perhaps he
moved with Jacob, but he did not live with relatives in Delaware Co per
1850 census. I'll look again for that bit of correspondence.
I'm happy for you to have a break-through. Please let me know what you
discover in IA.
