Tom,
I have to agree but that's the reason I'll donate mine to a public library - they
don't charge except to cover costs. Also because they will almost certainly always
have funding for proper care of such things. I've seen enough genealogy and
historical societies go belly up to scare me. Not that I don't think they're
worthy but you don't know what will happen 30 or 50 yrs down the road. Besides, I
believe most of those societies work closely with libraries and even provide for some of
them.
I'm really glad to know that so many people are thinking ahead about these things.
I'd like to make another suggestion. Make sure your kids, grandkids, etc know what
you want just in case you haven't gotten it down on paper or done the donating yet.
Right now I am able to do some look-ups with my resources here and will never charge for
that. I may not do it right on the spot but it will be free. I paid for a couple of my
books but was fortunate enough to have most come to me by inheritance. Like you, I want
to share my good fortune.
I've given some thought to getting someone to burn to CDs all the county bios that get
posted on line. It would take little effort and would insure that they would be stored
some place besides the elusive internet. I know the Muncie Public Library is in process
of burning all the city directories to CDs but that will take literally years to complete.
They are also scanning court documents to CD, as you all know. They're wonderful
projects and one not all libraries are doing yet.

Hi
I've been giving a lot of thought recently about what to do with my
files after I've 'moved on' to join the ancestors I'm studying. I have
decided to donate my files to some society or another with one (I hope
iron clad) proviso and that is that no one will ever be charged, either
directly or indirectly, for using my information. If whoever I decide
to give my research to cannot agree to that...then I'll just keep
looking until I find someone who will. I guess "I" feel that there is
enough 'people' out there getting rich out of others research, I sure
don't have to add any $$ to their pockets.
I'm not suggesting this course of action to anyone else... It is just
what I have decided to do.
Tom

Pat,
MY own personal suggestion is to the Muncie Public Library. Mary Lou
is
always making improvements in the genealogy section and recently has
started a
big set of family files. They keep track of who does what research
on
which
families and anything they can stick in those files, is slipped into
them
immediately. That's who is going to get the stuff my daughter
doesn't
care to
deal with or that we feel should end up there after we're gone.
I am
trying to
scan and burn to CD as much as possible for my daughter. I think
she'd
rather deal with those than all the old books, files, etc. Besides,
I
don't want
to burden her with the special care these old books etc will need.
It
takes
room and is expensive. Libraries are equipped to deal with this sort
of
"stuff".
