Aged Woman A Victim Of Suicide At Home
Mrs. Elizabeth Reed, 70, Hangs Self Two Miles Northwest of Yorktown
While her aged husband was hoeing weeds in a nearby cornfield in the sweltering morning
sun, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed, 70, well known old resident of Delaware county, whose home is
two miles northwest of Yorktown, tied a bed sheet around her neck, suspended it from a
door casement and then stumbled forward. The noose instantly tightened about her neck and
in a few moments she was dead.
Her body was found about 11 o'clock yesterday morning by Edward Dragoo, a son, who
drove to see his mother from his farm near Cammack. When he stepped into the door he saw
his mother lying face downward on the floor dead. He spread the alarm of the suicide and
neighbors attempted to resuscitate the body without avail.
At an inquest yesterday afternoon Coroner Downing made an investigation as to the motive
for the suicide but was unable to assign any cause. She had been in good health.
She was the wife of Stephen Reed and an old resident of the county. Funeral services will
be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Hofer chapel. Interment will be made
in the Hawk cemetery.
