SCOTT, Bishop. (Son of Olney and Jane Scott of Delaware County.)
Took sick during a trial in Delaware County 1885 for which he was
being tried for murder for the shooting of a neighbor's child,
William Haynes, age 17,(son of John Haynes), Union Twp. Newspaper
accounts feel it was an accidental shooting. The trial could not be
completed as Bishop Scott took too sick to stand trial. Bishop Scott
became ill with typhoid fever and went to Nebraska in Aug 1886 to be
cared for by relatives. He was attended by Dr. J.A. Hull during his
last days, at the home of William and Eliza A. (Scott) Arnold in
Stella, Richardson County, Nebraska (Eliza was his sister, another
child of Olney and Jane Scott of Delaware County, William their son
in law and husband to Eliza.) He died 2 Dec 1886, and is buried
Prairie Union Church Cemetery. Stella, County of Richardson,
Nebraska. Bishop Scott, according to court documents died at the home
of William Arnold. Reverend Charles L. Smith of the Methodist
Episcopal Church in Stella, Richardson County, Nebraska preached the
funeral discourse on 3 Dec 1886 at which a 'fair-sized' audience
attended. Although many members of Union Twp, Delaware County were
called as witnesses in the trial, it was felt to be a careless
accidental shooting caused by a prank between amicable neighbors.
