Minor Branch, Retired Merchant, Stricken
Three weeks after he lost a lawsuit in an attempt to recover damages for
injuries suffered in an automobile accident, Minor G. Branch, 78, died
Christmas Day of an ilness allegedly caused by that accident.
Mr. Branch was injured four years ago in an accicent at the Jackson Street
crossing of the C. and O. Railroad. Relatives said he never recovered from
the accident.
A damage suit against the company was tried in Randolph Circuit Court three
weeks ago, a verdict favoring the company being returned.
Lived Here 47 Years.
Mr. Branch was a retired dry goods merchant. His deat occurred at the
family home, 816 Adams St. He had lived in this city since 1888, when he
and his brother, R. H. Branch, established the merchantile business now
owned by A. E. Brown. The firm, located at 114 North Walnut St., was known
as Branch and Rose and later as Branch, Rose and Brown, before it was taken
over by the present management in 1918, when Mr. Branch retired.
His retirement ended a long career in merchantile circles. Mr. Branch was
born in Johnson County, May 4, 1856, and entered the dry goods business at
the age of 19 when he became associated with his two brothers at
Martinsville,
Several nieces and nephews survive. Mr. Branch was the last survivor of a
family of 12 children. The body, which was taken to Meeks Morturary, was
returned to the residence Wednesday afternoon.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Jackson Street
Christian Church, the Reverend Edgar F. Daugherty officiating. The casket
will not be opened at the church. Burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery.
