My Rosannah Smith was from the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, VT,
and is believed to be a "Foster" girl. Her husband was Nathan Smith who died
in Morgan County, OH, in 1827, leaving her with small children to raise. She
never remarried.
Nathan's brother, Abraham Smith, married Mary Anne Deming. Abraham's
descendants believe that Rosannah and Mary Anne were sisters (according to
a family Bible). I think that Mr. Foster died and Mrs. Foster married Mr.
Deming. And thus, the daughters became Foster-Deming.
Back then with so many people dying, the spouses frequently remarried. When
the widow remarried, her children took the surname of their step-father and
left us that look for them later confused!
Good luck with your research,

Hi
I could not help but notice the surnames in your posting. I know it is
probably only a coincidence but I have, in my line, a Rosannah COOPER born
about 1814 who married a Jonas SMITH on 25 Jul 1827 in Davies Co. IN. In
1830 the SMITH family was in Addison Twp, Shelby Co. IN with 3 Children.
In
1840 Jonas and Rosannah and 5 children were listed just after the Benjamin
COOPERS (Rosannah's father and mother) in the census. By 1850, the
children
of Jonas and Rosannah were living with her father Benjamin COOPER in Baker
Twsp, Martin Co. IN. We have no idea what happened to Rosannah SMITH
between 1827 and 1850 when her children were living with their
grandparents.
Benjamin COOPER and his wife Susanna Martha (Gibson) COOPER are both
buried
in Rees Cemetery, Perry Township, Delaware Co. IN. They 'removed' to
Delaware Co. sometime between 1870 and 1871.

Subject: [INDELAWA-L] Rosannah Smith
Rosannah Smith joined her family in Delaware County, IN, in late 1838. In
January 1839, she purchased 55 acres in Section 30 of Liberty Township -
the
same quarter where the Mt. Tabor M. E. Church & Cemetery later stood.
I have received word from Jan Dwyer that there is a female (among others)
in
Rosannah's household in 1840, that was age 10-15. I have known for some
time
that Rosannah and her husband, Nathan Smith (who died in Morgan County,
OH,
in 1827), had "10 girls and five boys", but I am missing information on
daughter #10.
What is the easiest way to view the 1840 census for his household to
learn
the date of this census so other theories can be developed?
(Rosannah and her daughter, Lucy (who died in 1847) are buried at the Mt.
Tabor Cemetery with two of Lucy's children. Could the younger "daughter"
also be buried at Mt. Tabor?)
