First of all, I need to state that my early Smith family members were
affiliated with the M. E. Church. So my reseach has thus focused on that
denomination.
I never did find the records for the Mt. Tabor M. E. Church. I did learn it
was part of a cirucuit (which was the custom at that time), and the records
should be in Selma. But they said they did not have them. (And there is no
way to know if they actually looked.)
All that was found from one of the following sources was on "Giving Report"
which was very interesting. Because under "Mt. Tabor Class" a number of my
"family members" were listed.
Others have found the records for their church at the DePauw Archives in
Greencastle, IN. Isebree(a)DEPAUW.EDU
It was also suggested that I try the
www.umc.org archives. When a church
closes, their old records are suppose to be forward to the conference
archives.
Some church histories are listed in Delaware County History books.
Abandoned church sites can sometimes be located through county land records.
Here in Minnesota, I was able to locate the origin of the church I was
searching for through the county records which told of their first meeting
and organization. (Early churches here, filed their incorporation papers,
and a list of their first board members.)
Seeing my postings, Karen kkcart(a)aol.com stumbled on to the history of the
Selma Circuit by accident while doing other research at the Muncie Library.
Yes, the history focused on the most successful church in that circuit, but
several of the others in that circuit were also mentioned. (Just came across
the copy of said "History of the Selma Methodist Church".)
Early plat maps also show the locations of churchs at that time. So (for
example) if your family lived in Liberty Township, you can study the old
plat for the churches that were located near them.
Well, I went through my "Mt. Tabor" file, page by page and this is a summary
of what I found. Hopefully it will help someone else. (Questions are always
welcome.)

U.B. is for United Brethren, most of those churches are now United
Methodist.
My Harmon and Brown families were members of Normal City U.B. church. It
is
now a Methodist church too.
It will depend on the church whether they kept their records.
Normal City U.B. has a history room, when I went in to talk with them, I
was
told one of the church log books the Ministers use, that recorded
marriages and funerals had been thrown in the trash. They lady in the
office
found it and rescued it.
I had tried to find information on some Methodist churches and was told
the
records are sent off and kept in storage. It would depend on the region
that
the church is located in to find the records.
If Mary Lu from Minnesota is still on this list she may have the
information, I was doing a look up for her when I called around and got
the
info on where the records were kept. I don't have it in my records now.
If she don't have the info still, you can call a Methodist church and they
should be able to tell you where the records are kept and how to get in
contact with them.
