My cousin said that it had been that way for a long while, that the man who owned the
property mowed it every week, but that's about all. I found some really good stones
in the little woods, especially the Shireys!! Hate to think who all is buried there!! I
know Aquilla Davis and the Sharps are there. From what I've been told, it was
originally the Sharp farm that the cemetery was located on.
My cousin said that my Mowreys lived across the road when my grandfather was born in the
1870's. I believe that was the Groenydyke? farm at the time. The old man there built
one of the first washing machines in his barn.

Marilyn,
I lived in Colorado for over 20 years and was the accountant for an industrial
bank there in Longmont. I worked with a man by the name of William (Bill)
Sharp. Got to talking one day and I asked him where he was from. Muncie, IN.
This man was a tall, think, bearded and moustached man. Very intelligent.
On one of my trips back home I sat down with my great grandfather's Portraits
and Biographical book and happened across a photo of a man that looked exactly
like the Bill Sharp I worked with. At the bottom of the photo...sure enough, it
was William Sharp - the original. When I told him about his ancestor, he knew
nothing about him.
We live in Muncie now and I wish I could find Bill so I could send him a copy of
the photo and history.
I'm trying to find out if the cemetery is on private property, tax paid or if
it's just abandoned. It's a real crime if it's abandoned. Either way, I
hope
to get a letter published in the paper to bring it to light. People should know
what's happening. When you saw it about 4 yrs ago, did anyone give you any idea
how long it had been that way?

me I sure don't remember it.

Marilyn,
I will be sending these photos to Virginia to post on the Indelaware site.
She'll post a note as soon as it's done. I think once people see the extent of
this obviously intentional vandalism, they will wish to do something. I find it
hard to believe this sort of thing can be ignored even if the land is privately
owned. I'm trying to find out if this has hit the paper ever. When were you in
there - so that I have an idea how long it's been this way?

I wrote to the list quite a while ago about Sharp Cemetery!! My ancestors are
the Sharps buried there!! The vandalism was horrible!! William Sharp's 'metal'
stone had been knocked out in the middle. Shirley, can you tell me what photos
you have. I have a few but not many! I walked right in there with my cousin,
didn't ask anyone as he knew where it was. Such a pity!! I asked the list if
anyone knew who the township trustee was or when they were going to redo the
cemetery but didn't get many responses.
PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!! THIS CEMETERY HAS MOST OF THE ORIGINAL LANDOWNERS OF SALEM
TWP IN IT!!

Subject: [INDELAWA-L] SHARP CEMETERY
I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has visited the Sharp Cemetery lately?
I nearly cried when I saw it and took many photos. Has the destruction been
publicized? Is this cemetery scheduled for repairs?
We were at first told by a nearby resident that they own it and don't usually
allow people to go there. When we bluntly asked permission, they relented.
There is no sign of any kind, anywhere to indicate where this cemetery is and it
is not visible from the road. This seems to be a classic case of multiple
infractions by a number of people of the state cemetery laws. This is also a
pioneer cemetery and I was under the impression they were protected.
Mark, if you're on the list, please feel free to comment.
