Doing a grave marking for a Revolutionary War Veteran is
best done probably in association with the SAR Chapter at or
near the location of the burial site. If you are in the
Muncie Indiana area, I would suggest you contact Mark Kreps
of the Continental Chapter of the SAR there, and one of
those instrumental in getting John GORDON's grave marked
(and for the excellent ceremony his SAR Chapter carried
out). The DAR as an organization will participate,
apparently only if the Revolutionary War Patriot has been
approved for Patriot status by a DAR Lady, applying for
membership or a Supplemental Certificate. If you are not in
the Delaware County, IN area, suggest you:
1-Do the research. No one will do it for you, but some one
else may have already gotten SAR or DAR Patriot status for
your soldier, making your job much easier. What you need to
prove is that the person you are getting the tombstone for
is the same as the claimed Patriot, and is buried in that
cemetery or died within a reasonable distance.
2-You can get a Government stone, only if no "viable" stone
already exists and you can prove the Patriot. You, as an
individual or with or through an SAR Chapter can order from
the US Veterans' Service, a nice (choice of styles-suggest a
granite) stone, but you will need an authority to sign from
the cemetery where you want to place the stone. Application
forms can be obtained on line.
3-From there on, the work is extensive, but straight
forward.
4-A dedication can be anywhere from a single individual
providing a dignified placement of the stone, to a DAR or
SAR Chapter or even State organization making a big ceremony
for the value of publicizing their organization.
By the way, who is your Revolutionary War Pensioner? You do
know that there is a very good index of all Rev. War
Pensioners, don't you (NGS book)? Also, if you will include
your Pensioner's name in the title, it will be more
searchable in this Mail List Archives.
Please contact me off list if any other details of ordering
the stone is wanted. I can suggest approaches for the
genealogy part of the effort, but can't teach a course in
genealogy over this Delaware County, IN Mail List. I will
be leaving this List, by the weekend.
