Joseph Dungan (born 1780) and his wife, Elizabeth Howery, came to Delaware County, from
Fayette County, IN.
In Delaware County he purchased two parcels of land on May 16, 1833. 40 acres in Section
24, Center Township, and 67.01 acres in Section 19, Liberty Township.
He was joined the following year by his brother, Benjamin Dungan (born 1782) and wife,
Margaret.
Margaret died and Benjamin's second wife was "Mrs. Elizabeth Dungan" (widow
of Joseph) on August 1, 1836.
The estate of Joseph Dungan, deceased, reported on February 27, 1837, by Samuel
Hutchings, noted that after the bills were paid, $10.57 1/2 cents was available to
distributed between the heirs. (None are listed on this court document.)
The February Term (of court) 1845, noted that Samuel Hutchings was guardian of the
"minor and infant heirs of Joseph Dungan, deceased". But again no names of the
children are listed.
Samuel Hutchings died in 1849, and during the November Term (of Court) 1849, "...the
appointment for guardian and there upon the court appoint Wm. J. Moore guardian of the
persons and estates of Joseph Dungan (born 1827 per his tombstone inscription) and Samuel
H. Dungan (born 1833) heirs of Joseph Dungan (born 1780), deceased".
Again there is no mention of the other siblings/heirs.
Helm's 1881 Delaware County, IN, History states that (Benjamin) "his wife died,
leaving ten children to mourn her, namely: Rebecca, Elias, William, Elizabeth, Hester
(most say "Esther"), James, John W., Joseph A., Isaac and Benjamin. His second
wife was Elizabeth, widow of his brother, Joseph...This union was blessed by one son -
Charles." Ok, so we have a list of Benjamin Dungan's children. (No record has
been found for Benjamin, Mr. or Charles and no burial records have been found.) How about
Joseph's children?
We note with interest that the 1830 census for Fayette County,IN, shows mostly girls in
Joseph's household.
I have checked the Delaware County, GenWeb Marriage Index, and have come up with the
following possible daughters for Joseph. I am hoping that someone who is familiar with
this family can let me know how good my "guesses are" :o) (As I do not have
Ancestry, so I can't follow these families by census records.)
(1) Elizabeth Dungan married Jacob Simmons on March 9, 1834.
(2) Catherine Dungan married Jacob Payton on January 2, 1834.
(3) Ellen Dungan married Andrew J. Blake on September 13, 1835.
(4) Mary Dungan married William Bradwick on January 28, 1836.
(5) Jane Dungan married David H. Hamilton on November 14, 1839. They moved to Summit
Township, Marion County, Iowa.
(6) Lowis (Lois?) Dungan married Jacob Bradwick on November 2, 1847.
(7) Joseph Dungan born about 1827-1830 was married in Delaware County (but I forgot to
write down who he married before I started this message :o(
(8) Samuel Dungan was born in 1833. He married Rosannah Lowry on July 31, 1853. They moved
to Summit Township, Marion County, Iowa, where they were neighbors to Jane and David
Hamilton. Both wives (Rosannah and Jane) are buried in Summit Township. (Rosannah was my
mother's grandfather's sister.)
The later generations of the Dungan family are buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery. But
there is no record of Joseph (born 1780) and Margaret (born 1788) and the other older
burials of Dungan family members who died in Delaware County. When was the Beech Grove
Cemetery established?
All bits and pieces for this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.REMEMBER: The above names
are guesses based on available information as outlined above.
