Message Board Post:
Thanks for the reply Sharon. I have quite a bit on my David and his wife Mary Ann
Fletcher. It is mostly stuff I have posted on ancestry that other people are erroneously
using as being part of the Abigail Watson and Ephraim Carey line. My David, b. 1829 is
NOT their son, but so many people have posted that info that it is dominating ancestry. I
am reaching out in a lot of directions to see if I can turn any stones. I have a lot on my
David (see below), - just need to figure out his parents.
I am trying to determine the parents of a David Cary (sometimes with a W. as middle
initial). He is mixed up in history with one of his relatives (another David W. Cary).
1. Both lived in Delaware County at the same time and are related somehow.
2. My David Cary married Mary Ann Fletcher in 1851 in Delaware County, Indiana (I have
this marriage record).
3. The other David W. Cary married a Mary Lewis in 1855 in Delaware County, Indiana. (I
have this marriage record.)
4 .Some sources have them mixed as the same David with two wives. They are NOT.
"The Delaware County, Indiana Genealogist and Historian", Vol 5, No. 4, Dec 1996
published a massive error on page 83 that has permitted the mixing up of these two Davids.
(I have this record.) I have all census records for 1860, 1870, 1880 that prove these
are two different couples, not one David with two wives as #4 above erroneously lists.
5. The David W. Cary that married Mary Lewis in 1855 was the son of Ephraim Cary and
Abigail Watson. (I know this based on census records and other sources.)
6. My David is buried in Jerome Cemetery, Jerome, Union Twp., Howard County, IN.
According to information on the website for the cemetery, he was born 21 Dec 1829, and
died 12 Jun 1869 in Howard Co, IN. There is no surviving tombstone for him.

7. On Find A Grave, I located information on my David's wife - Mary A. (Fletcher) Cary
Penland:
www.finadagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.egi?page=gr&GRis=65361180. She was born 22
May 1832, Henry Co., IN, and died 30 Nov 1920, Lynn, Randolph Co., IN. She is buried in
Poplar Run Cemetery, Farmland, Randolph Co., IN. (I also have her obituary that confirms
her marriage to David, 2nd marriage and her parents.)
8. The obituary for Mary A. (Fletcher) Cary Penland states that she was the "mother
of eight children by her first marriage" and "mothered the children of her
second husband which were three." She married my David W. Cary in 1851.
9. According to the Marriage Record Index done by the WPA in 1939 (Vol. I, p. 107) for
Howard County, Indiana, Mary Carey married Hiram [Fernandes] Penland on 10 Jul 1875 (Bk.
C-3, p.136). This index also lists other Cary-Carey marriage for some of the Carey
children from my David Carey and his wife Mary Fletcher.
10. My David W. Carey, Private in Co. K, 140th Regiment of Indiana Infantry, enlisted 24
Oct 1864, and discharged 11 Jul 1865. On 5 Oct 1889, Mary A. Penland made application for
a pension (405701, certificate 362163), as did her son, Ulysses Grant Carey, minor
(application 573728, certificate 440755). The form states that David D. Carey died 12 Jun
1869 which is confirmed by his tombstone in #6 above. (I have his record of service and
the pension application from his wife Mary.)
11. I also have two deeds from Delaware Co, IN (your library) with David and his wife
Mary Fletcher as parties in the deed. The other David Cary that is also in Delaware Co, IN
at the same time is also on several deeds during the same timeframe.
I have looked at almost every Cary deed in your on line data base for a connection to my
David.
Deeds I have that are of interest:
a. Feb 15th, 1839 - Eli Hoover and his wife Nancy Hoover to Amos Cary - not sure who this
Amos is but, might be a possible father for my David.

b. July 3rd, 1851 Delaware Co, -David W. Cary to Mary A. Fletcher (This is my David.)

c. Nov 12th, 1853 Ephraim Cary executor of Amos Cary to John Holloway.
d. August 28th, 1854 Delaware Co, - David Cary to David Fletcher (This is my David.)
e. Nov 24th, 1854 Delaware Co, David Cary to Daniel Cary - (Not sure if this is my David.
Mary does not sign this deed and it is during their marriage.)
f. May 2nd, 1855 Delaware Co, - David W. Cary to Abel Gibson - David's wife Mary also
signed this deed. (This is my David.)
12. The children of my David Cary and wife Mary Ann Fletcher are as follows:

One possibility that I have been thinking is that my David could be the nephew of the
other David and be the same age. Ephraim, b. 1780 had older children named Amos, d,
1838ish , William, d. 1839ish and James that all could have fathered my David. My David
is born in 1829. Ephraim's youngest son David, is born in 1832. My David does name
one of his son's Amos.
This is all the info I have on my David. I do not need any of the documents that I have
above. I do not need census data either. I am purely interested in any other data that
may help me link my David W. Cary, b. 1829 to his real parents.
If you think you can help me find anything that I do not already have that may connect my
David to possibly one of the Amos Cary's in Indiana at the same time, please let me
know and I would love to pay for this. I know this is a lot of information but I wanted to
show you that I have been working on this for some time and cannot get to Delaware Co,
Indiana myself to research.
Thanks,
Lisa A. Carey
