SMITHFIELD was located in Section 22, Liberty Township. Over the years I
have gathered a great deal of information on this early settlement because
my ancestor's brother settled there in 1829. Another branch of my family
tree (my mother's great grandfather) had children born at Smithfield. Not
having a time table of their migration pattern, I too studied other
"Smithfield" sites between Delaware County, IN, and Ohio, only to finally
determine Smithfield I was looking for was in Delaware County, IN
There is a 15 page history of Smithfield, IN, at
http://www.stonesandbones.us/smithfield.html
I found this site in January 2006, posted by scot shively(a)cox.net.net (In
my notebook I have left a space between scot and shively, so I am presuming
that "scot" is not a part of his email address.
Blount is not listed there on the 1830 census, but my John Smith is.
In 1873, five blocks with 6-8 lots each were still owned by varioius people,
including the M. E. Church.
Stout's mill was an important part of this early settlement.
