Subject: Re: [INDELAWA] Delaware & Randolph INGenWeb sites have moved
Janni,
TGN was going to move all the websites on Rootsweb to the Ancestry server.
GN owns both Rootsweb and Ancestry. In order to keep our USGenWeb sites on
ootsweb/Ancestry they were going to put their banners or mastheads on all
ur websites and they were going to be moved and stored on Ancestry's
erver.
Our web addresses would switch from
rootsweb.com to
ttp://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~inrandol/ they added ancestry to the
ddress.
TGN says that Rootsweb will continue to be free and nothing would change,
ut things do change and most of us felt it was time to break away from them
ll together. We are now on our own and don't have to worry about a company
dding to our pages or dictating what we can and cannot do.
I personally didn't like the idea of the mast head on all my page. I was
oncerned people would click on the links up there and think they were on a
ay per view site. I didn't want to confuse people and get them worried that
hey had to pay for the information. Most would know what was going on but
here are many who would be upset or not figure out how to get back the
roject pages.
If you want to see what one of their mastheads looks like visit Virginias
ld site that I maintain as a memorial to her.
ttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~acorntree/
The last I heard there were different mastheads going on the sites.
The USGenWeb Project has always been a free site and we want to keep it that
ay. It was time to distance our sites from the pay-per-view sites, and
ike I said we won't have to worry about changes in a company or worry about
he next thing they would want to add or where they were moving us to.
I do think it was great that Rootsweb hosted our sites for as long as they
id. It was nice, and I still keep a subscription to Ancestry. But Ancestry
s ran by a for profit company/corporation and USGenWeb is ran by volunteers
nd is non-profit
To answer MaryLu's question, a bookmark is the same as adding a link to your
avorites in your web browser. If you go to a site and click add to
avorites it saves the link. If you have done that with the Delaware site
ou would need to add the new address and delete the old one.
Hope this helps,
ina Richardson

s I understand it, and correct me someone if I'm wrong, the site will still
xist. It will just be at a new "address" where we can check it.
I have a question. I gather from this that Rootsweb is going to disappear
r go into the Ancestry part that charges? Or what is the reason for this
hange?
Thanks for all you've done at the Delaware Co., IN site. I have also loved
sing it!

ubject: [INDELAWA] Delaware & Randolph INGenWeb sites have moved
Hello everyone,
First I want to wish everyone a HAPPY EASTER!
I wanted to let everyone know that the Delaware County and Randolph County
Website have moved from Rootsweb to a new server.
The sites are located at the following links.
http://www.ingenweb.org/indelaware/
http://www.ingenweb.org/inrandolph/
Please be sure to update your bookmarks.
There may be some broken links on some of the pages, I am still uploading
some of the pages and images to the new server. I will run a link checker
after the entire sites are online and will get any broken links fixed as
soon as I can.
Most of the Indiana counties are moving from Rootsweb to the new server.
You will be able to access the county pages from the State website.
http://www.ingenweb.net/
The State Coordinator has been updating the links as we get the sites
moved.
The county coordinators who decided to move all chipped in to purchase web
hosting for the INGenWeb Project so we could move our pages off of
Rootsweb before the sites were moved to the
Ancestry.com server.
Eventually there will be a page set up for any researchers who would like
to make a donation to the INGenWeb Project. The donations would help us
keep it on the new server, free from advertisements, or to help purchase
more space for records if needed later down the road.
http://ingenweb.org/igwdonors.htm
I also wanted to apologize to those that emailed me today about the broken
links on the old site. I didn't have a redirect page uploaded on the old
site yet. Sorry! <G> I do have a redirect up there now, but I am not sure
how long it will be there so please don't forget to change your bookmarks.
Thanks,
Gina Richardson
