Mac and all,
Oops I guess I had better stop looking at emails so late at night I
missed what he was asking for anyways your right Ball State did acquire
10,000 probate records. I have went and found 3 wills there one took me
2 days to copy the actual file and $20.00. The last time I was there
(which has been a few months ago) they had only archived about (I think)
4,000 (they have been archiving them for about 3 yrs now.) They are very
helpful there. The probate records are wills or a number of things that
would of been held in a Probate court. They have a card file that is
great all you have to do is look up the person's name in the card file
and find the person your looking for then they will pull the actual
deed/will what ever the Probate record was and bring it to you and you
get to hold the folder with it's original contents in it. IT'S REALLY
NEAT... I was told that they recieved these from the Court house, I
guess they originally were stored in the basement of the court house,
then before that I was told they were found in some cubby holes in the
original court house that was destored some years ago. (now I may be a
little off about how they actual got these probate records but I think
I'm pretty close) Shawn Grey could tell us for sure....
Anyways, I did not relize what this person was actually wanting or I
could sent this instead of the addresses for the court house.
I have found in my past experience if your looking for records in
Delaware County In.
Sometimes they are very hard to find (my experience of my own
families)in the county records/city records, but just about everytime I
have went to Bracken Lib. at Ball State the people there have helped me
find what I need. Also the Historical Alliance has helped alot as well
as the Lib. downtown. But most help came from Bracken, So my advice to
all who search for records in Del.Co.In. go to Bracken first. (It'll
probley save you some running). Also Meeks Mortuary alot of times will
have copies of obituary's (not all the time but sometimes) also Muncie
Public Library Carnegie Library which is the Downtown Muncie main lib.
in the basement they have micro film of the Muncie Newspaper they also
have a nice card file for this. (NOTE: the Muncie Newspaper does not
even have these records I called one time they don't keep micro film on
their newspaper, I think they told me they DID NOT even have back in
1966 (which is only 33 yrs ago). But Carnegie Lib. does they go back to
(not sure exact date) but I know early 1800's.
Well that's my tips for researching in Del.Co.IN. If your looking in
Madison County Indiana Anderson's Public Lib. has a genealogy room
called the Indiana Room. It's got a pretty good selection of stuff.
Just thought I'd add my praise to Bracken and the college students
and staff for such a delightful, access to hard to find records. (Made my
life easier several times)...:)
Hoped this email helped someone ready to pull their hair out with
finding things here in Muncie area.(like I did).
Sincerely,
Donata Boyle

I was in the Delaware Court Court House Mon July 12, and asked in
the County Clerks office where I might be able to find out if there was
a will for a man who died in 1880 just before death reporting was
established in 1882.
They (the Clerks Office Folks) referred me to Ball State University
Archives at Archives and Special Collections Bracken Library as those
folks somehow acquired many of those old documents.
Shawn didn't explain his answer, but since the guy wanted an old
deed, he really didn't want the court house...but rather where his
old deed might be.
Just my 2¢ worth.
