Hi all
The mystery deepens
I had a friend passing through Delaware Co. go to the Tomlinson Cemetery
looking for LYKINS graves... especially David LYKINS and his wife Jane
LYKINS nee McLEAN
He found several related LYKINS but not the two I was most interested in
finding.
Now all of the information I have says that David LYKINS b. 15 Mar 1818
in Franklin Co. VA d. 04 Apr 1883 in Center Township, Delaware County, IN
and was buried in Tomlinson near his mother Rhoda LYKINS nee LIGHT
Jane LYKINS nee McLEAN has totally disappreared.... I found her in the
1860 Delaware Co. census but not in the 1870......1. she died in between
1860 and 1870 (cannot find any record of her death in Delaware Co.) 2. she
packed up and moved out leaving her family behind...(not impossible but how
likely is that really? Besides I cannot find a record of a Jane McLEAN's
death either) 3. she divorced David LYKINS and remarried... (unable to
find a record of a Jane LYKINS or Jane McLEAN getting married between 1860
and 1870 and I'm not sure how accurate the divorce records are for that
period in that area)
Bottom line...what happened to my Ggreatgrandmother?? Why couldn't my
friend find David's grave at Tomlinson (actually we didn't have the exact
location of the grave at Tomlinson)?
Next missing person in Delaware Co. My Ggrandfather David LYKINS, the
son of the above mentioned David and Jane LYKINS married Mary Belle SMITH,
on their marriage records it says that her mother's maiden name was Susan
SMITH and no father's name was listed... ok...oversight on someone's part?
Now...talking to some of my older relatives the oral history says that
Mary B.'s father was a John DEVINE...whom Susan married and soon after
Mary's birth divorced. She was supposed to have resumed her maiden
name...SMITH.
BUT on the death certificate of Susan SMITH it says her husband was a
B.F. SMITH and that her parents were Samuel and Susan CLARK of OHIO....
(totally confused yet?) The only record of marriage I find for a Susan
CLARK is to a man by the name of Henry SHARON/SHEARON ...they were married
on 29 Jun 1850 in Delaware Co.
Great... Mary Belle was born 06 Jul 1866 in Monon, White Co. IN and d.
18 Feb 1952 in Fullerton, Orange County, CA... so it might fit.... as Susan
was supposed to be born on 07 Mar 1828 and d. 29 Apr 1904 in Delaware Co.
IN....... so she could have been 38 when Mary was born.....
Now... 1. was Susan the daugher of Samuel CLARK of OH...2. did she ever
marry a John DEVINE and was their child indeed Mary Belle SMITH 3. did
Susan marry Henry SHAERON and was this her 2nd marriage? 3. who in the
heck was B.F. SMITH..and where did Mary get the last name of SMITH on her
marriage records in 1883 when she married David LYKINS in Delaware Co.
IN????????????????
ANY help here would be greatly appreciated......
Thanks gang
Tom
