The Centennial of Indianapolis 1820-1920
In Eighteen-Twenty, the Hoosier State,
Was the red mans home,in the forest great;
But the white man came,and paved the way,
for civilizations brighter day,
He builded his cabin and cleared the land;
Where the new state capital,would later stand.
John McCormick was the first to take the trail,
and move his family to this fertile vale;
He builded better than he knew,
Then the others came and the "settlement" grew;
The Hardings and Wilsons and Pogues and others;
James and Samuel, John McCormick's brothers.
The Nowlands who were anxious to their luck,
Came all the way from old Kaintuck;
Drs. Coe and Dunlap,Andy Burns and Blake,
Then many other footsteps followed closely in their wake,
but time would fail my friends, to me, tis very clear,
To give due praise to each "Hardy Pioneer".
Twas a long weary journey, filled with struggles and care,
to a strange land, mongst strangers,their hardships to share;
It took grit and courage, the old home ties to break,
A new country to enter,their fortunes to make;
But to know that all hardships, when they're wisely endured,
will be paid for ten times, when success is assured.
The success comes to us, who reap what they've sown,
We are gathering the fruits,they have nurtured and grown;
Let us give them due credit, for what they have done,
In fighting lifes battles, and for victories won;
Peace be to their ashes, grand hereos of old,
They've entered their rest, in that "city of gold".
They deserve to be remembered, for the noble part they play,
Our lives are filled with blessing, by the sacrifice they made;
The forest where they used to roam, long since have passed away,
The humble cabin where they lived,has mouldered to decay;
They by honest toil and labor, progress path have helped to clear,
And through memory, looking backward, we should hold them grandly dear.
