It is not unheard of to have two (or more) towns with the same name in different counties
in the same state.
Here is an example from Iowa that I know of. Some of my ancestors settled near West
Union, Jones Township, Union County, Iowa. In 1854 the town was platted, and several
homes and a couple of stores were built. They even had a postmaster. But the town was
vacated in 1863. Some of my ancestors were buried in West Union Cemetery. The cemetery
can no longer be located, except for its general location in the portion of the section of
land where it was platted--it's all fields now.
Meanwhile,
http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi shows only West Union in
Fayette and Tama Counties in Iowa.
So, it is helpful to look at references that show towns that no longer exist--particularly
for ancestors who settled in rural areas; many towns were created that did not last.
The public library here has a number of good reference books for place names--including
places that no longer exist. Sorry, can't think of any names, but the reference
librarians are quite helpful in locating them when the books are needed. Old atlases are
also helpful in this regard, too.

This is a great tool, plug in the city, and state and you will get the
county. Very hand indeed! >>
I'm so confused....are there really two Clinton Indianas???? this site
shows one Clinton in Vermillion County and the other in Ripley
county......isn't this unusual to have two towns in the same state named
Clinton???
