Hi All I have a paper about OUR Indian friends.
the land we now call our own was first inhabited by the Delaware n Miami Indians.
The Delaware Indians were an inportant Algonquin tribethat were pushedwestward from the
delaware riveruntil they reached our area along White River in 1800.
The delaware had three clans,The Turtle, the Turkey, and the Wolf (Muncie)also known as
Wapanachki or 'Eastern Land People'.
After the early wars with the White people the Delaware an Miami's shared this land
under certain treaty rights.
The treaty of 1818 gave the indian Lands to the GOVERNMENT
and also granted land to Rebecca Hackley, who was a half-blood Miami, that included Muncey
town which is now the city of Muncie.
That area was named Wapikamikunk ( White River Town or Whitewaters) From this language
came the name Wapahani or White River.
Under the Treaty of 1818 the Delaware's were GIVEN Three YRS. to move and they started
their migration to Oklahoma in 1820.
One Indian who remained in our area and became well known was Indian Jim. He helpet build
the first school an several other buildings.
He was the only Delaware allowed to remain in our area,
he died in 1873 at age of 69 an is buried in Rees cemetery ,has a marker.
