Hi Sharon,
Yep, it is indeed a small world. Phebe married Thomas J. Fudge on March 21,
1839, in Preble County, OH. Thomas died in 1861 at the age of 46. My
understanding is that Phebe remarried to Marion Swingley, however, I haven't
delved into that at all and considered it unconfirmed.
I don't have the name of John Pence's wife. Who did he marry?
As for Christena Sellers, she was born July 14, 1785, in Rockingham County, VA,
to John Sellers and Elizabeth Pirkey. Christena married William Pence, Jr. on
September 15, 1801, in Rockingham Co.
Their 1st nine children from 1802 - 1818 were born in Rockingham Co. The 10th
child, Nancy Pence, was born November 28, 1819, in Butler Co., OH, as was the
11th child, Albert Pence, in 1823. Not sure when they made it over to Preble
Co.
Christena died in Preble County, OH, on June 22, 1849, and is buried in
Gettysburg Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Preble Co., OH. She survived husband
William by only 12 days as he had died on June 10, 1849, and is buried in
Gettysburg Cemetery as well.
I'm starting to get the feeling that I will have to indeed go by the
preponderance of evidence regarding Jacob Sellers. I know he and his older
sister, Elizabeth, lived beside one another in Greene County, Ohio, and that
Elizabeth did go to Delaware Township, Delaware County, IN, with her daughter,
Christena (Ault) Richardson, and her own family in about 1836. Elizabeth
remained living with them the rest of her days until her death in 1882 at the
age of 90. Too many coincidences and connections for the Jacob Sellers of
Delaware Township, Delaware County, IN, to not have been the same Jacob Sellers
of Rockingham County, VA. Just hope a revelation opens up at some point in
order to make it conclusive. I hate having the "theories" and
"probably's" out
there, ya know :-)
I do sincerely appreciate all the help. Really nice to get so much help! And,
thanks for being willing to look for Jacob in the bio book at the library. Let
me know if anything turns up.
Michael

Michael,
Another example of "small world." My direct ancestor is Phebe's brother,
John
Pence. I spent a bit of time studying Phebe, as I found in a Parke Co IN
history (she was mentioned as John's sister) that she lived in Morgan County IN
where I live. I think she spent a few years here living with her daughter
Rebecca and family but ultimately went back to Preble Co OH where she is
buried. I don't know anything about her husband, except he appears to have died
young.
Surely that bit of evidence you want till be found. If you go after Greene Co
OH records, some of the early ones are in the Montgomery Co OH records,
boundaries apparently having changed. I got a guardianship from there in
another line.
Christina is the only Sellers in my FTM. Thanks for more about her. Hope you
find the smoking gun, but you may have to go with preponderance of the evidence.
When I"m at the library here I will look for Jacob in the bio book called
something like "..........and Representative Men of Indianapolis and Vicinity."

Sharon,
Ahhhh... I wondered if there was a connection there and indeed there is. I'm
well acquainted with the Fudges and Pences as they intermarried and went to
church with my Zeller/Sellers in Rockingham County, Virginia. They were all at
the Peaked Mountain Church near McGaheysville, a joint Lutheran and Reformed
congregation. I grew up in neighboring Augusta County, about 35 miles southeast
of where they all settled, though I now live in New Mexico.
I'm familiar with Phebe Ann Pence and husband Thomas J. Fudge. Phebe's father
was Henry Pence. Phebe's uncle (Henry's brother), William Pence, Jr., married
Christena Sellers. Ironically, Christena (Sellers) Pence was an aunt to the
Jacob Sellers I'm trying to prove as Christena was the youngest sister of
Jacob's father, Henry Sellers, Sr.
Jacob's father, Henry Sellers, Sr., took their family from Rockingham County
north into neighboring Hardy County, (West) Virginia, in about 1805. Jacob's
grandfather, John Sellers, Sr., wrote in his March 1804 will that he was leaving
40 pounds to his son, Henry, provided that Henry did leave that part of the
country. Its unclear whether Henry was planning to leave and John was helping
him if he decided to go or whether John was forcing Henry to leave, ie, give him
40 pounds provided he does leave. In any case, John died in 1804 and Henry
removed his family to Hardy County, (West) Virginia. Jacob's brother, John
Sellers, fought in the War of 1812 and received bounty land for his service in
Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. I think that's why they all then took off from
Hardy County, WV, to Greene County, OH.
I do believe that Jacob Sellers of Delaware County, IN, is the same Jacob
Sellers that was born to Henry Sellers, Sr. in Rockingham County, VA. I just
need that little smoking gun to concretely put it all together.
Thanks again for all of your wonderful help!

Michael,
I got interested when I saw the Fudge info. Fudge is a family that one of my
Pence ggg aunts married into in Preble Co OH. She was Phebe Pence who married
Thomas Fudge. The Pences came from Rockingham Co VA, so I think you can see a
migration pattern. Sellers may have been one of them.
There were a number of German Baptist families who travelled the same route,
though these Pences had baptized children Lutheran in VA and appear not to have
affiliated with German Baptists in that generation. Some did earlier and
later. You might check the archives of the BRETHREN list, to rule out that
connection.
And I suppose you know to look for Zoeller (various spellings) early on.
Do check out the MCPL website, which has many court cases that may include your
surname and allied families. It is an amazing resource.

Hi Sharon,
Good ideas. I have the bio about Catherine Sellers who married John Fudge.
Their son, John Sellers Fudge, removed from Greene County, Ohio, to Niles
Township in Delaware County, IN, in 1864. He died in Albany on February 21,
1898, a month shy of turning 71. John's mother, Catherine (Sellers) Fudge,
would've been a 2nd cousin to the Jacob Sellers I'm trying to prove. If Jacob
is/was who I theorize he was, then Catherine's and Jacob's grandfathers were
brothers.
Will check out the INDELAWA website for the reference guides and (hopefully)
bios.
Thanks for the great ideas!

Michael,
There are several county histories, and I only have one. It's the Portrait and
Bio Record reprint, in which Catherine Sellers who m. John S Fudge is
mentioned. There's a Greene Co OH connection, and they lived near Albany. I'm
going to be gone several hours but will give you the basics when I return. You
can access many county histories via HeritageQuest, which may be a program your
local library subscribes to.
Plus check out the INDELAWA website on rootsweb, which should list reference
guides. There' s also an area-widegroup of bios that focuses on central IN
people and did include some from Delaware co. It was likely by subscription, as
I think the county history bios were.
More later,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,
Good advice. Much appreciated.
Yes, I have Jacob's original deed, and, yes, he was the first person to buy the
land from the gov't. What I've learned is that Jacob Sellers was one of the
first to settle in Section 21 of Delaware Township, Delaware County, Indiana, on
or about August 25, 1834. He then patented 40 acres there on November 11, 1835,
in the "North East quarter of the North West quarter of Section Twenty One in
Township Twenty One of Range Eleven East". Since Jacob settled and established
himself in Delaware County in 1834 prior to patenting the land in 1835, the
original land deed states he is of "Delaware County, Indiana". He later added
to this land and owned upwards of 170 acres by the time he wrote his initial
Will on May 22, 1862. Much of the land was described as being bordered by and
located on the "north side of the Mississinewa River" in Delaware Township.
As for Delaware County histories, I'm afraid I haven't been able to find much of
any. The only one I've been able to locate online is General William Harrison
Kemper's 1908 "A twentieth century history of Delaware County, Indiana, Volume
1". That one has but one mention of Jacob Sellers but does confirm that he was
one of the first to settle in Section 21 in 1834. If there are other Delaware
County histories out there, I haven't found any that I can access. Any ideas?
My theory is that Jacob Sellers of Delaware County, Indiana, was the Jacob
Sellers born in the mid-1790s in Rockingham County, Virginia. His father, Henry
Sellers, Sr., removed the family, which included Jacob and his siblings
Elizabeth, John, and Henry Sellers, Jr., to Hardy County, (West) Virginia, in
about 1805 and remained there until about 1815 or so when they all removed to
Greene County, Ohio. Jacob Sellers of Rockingham County, Virginia, married
Nancy/Lydia Beatty on August 26, 1817, in Greene County, Ohio, and remained
there through at least 1830. The Will of Jacob's father, Henry Sellers, Sr.,
was filed in Greene County, Ohio, in May 1829, and clearly notes the portions of
land there that son Jacob Sellers, his oldest son and 2nd born overall, was to
have. However, Jacob Sellers is not located in Greene County, Ohio, beyond the
1830 Census.
Jacob's niece, Christena (Ault) Richardson, & her husband, Daniel Richardson,
removed from Greene County, Ohio, to Delaware County, Indiana, in 1837. As a
child in Hardy County, (West) Virginia, and even after her marriage to Daniel
Richardson in Greene County, Ohio, on August 5, 1829, Christena had lived next
door to her uncle, Jacob Sellers. I think its more than just coincidence that
Jacob Sellers arrives in Delaware County, Indiana, in 1834, patents 40 acres in
1835, and then Daniel & Christena Richardson arrive but two years later and
patent upwards of 160 acres in Section 21 of Delaware County, IN, in 1837. I'd
just love to find the smoking gun, so to speak, that concretely proves that
Jacob Sellers of Delaware County, Indiana, is the same Jacob Sellers that was
born in Rockingham County, Virginia.
I sincerely appreciate all the great help and ideas. This is quite a great list
and so helpful! Unfortunately, I don't live in Indiana, but it makes the help
from this great list all the more valuable.

Michael,
Do you have Jacob's original deed? Was he the first person to buy this land
from the government?
Unless the website is no longer active, first go to the Bureau of Land
Management's General Land Office website and look for that parcel of land. See
if he is the original purchaser. The original document should come up, and you
can print it. The document may say "Jacob Seller of ........(wherever).....
If he wasn't the first purchaser, you need to go to Delaware County land records
in their admin. building.
I'm guessing you have checked the Delaware County histories to see if he has a
bio or is mentioned in one.
You are fortunate to have not only the DCHA library and the Archives at Bracken,
but also the Muncie Public Library to help you with further information
gathering.

Subject: [INDELAWA] Jacob Sellers & family
Hi list!
I'm looking for any ancestral information regarding Jacob Sellers buried in
Godlove Cemetery in Delaware Township. I'm looking for anything that might
reveal or even hint as to the names of Jacob's parents, the maiden name of his
wife, Lydia, and/or where he came from when he settled in Delaware Township in
Section 21 on August 25, 1834.
Jacob and wife, Lydia, are located in Delaware Township per the 1850 Census.
He's listed as age 62 and being born in Virginia. His son, John Sellers,
married Catherine Battrell on November 11, 1847. John and Catherine were living
next door in 1850. John was listed as age 27 and being born in Ohio. I believe
that Jacob's daughter, Eliza, married Abraham Godlove on December 17, 1840.
Eliza was also listed as living next door to John Sellers and Jacob Sellers on
the 1850 Census, was listed as age 27, and also being born in Ohio.
Both Jacob and son John are oddly listed with the last name of "Silvy" on the
1860 Census for Delaware Township.
Jacob's gravestone in Godlove Cemetery notes that he "Died in the 77th year of
his age", however, it doesn't list exactly when he died. I'd also like to
learn
if there is a record of exactly when he died.
Any help regarding Jacob Sellers and the possible name(s) of his parents, the
maiden name of wife Lydia, and/or where they may have come from when they
settled in Delaware Township in 1834 would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Michael Sellers
