It was something to read about over the weekend and then if you felt you wanted to voice your opinion it was to be on Ancestry's comment page or the other blogs that I linked in my message. All the sites I listed have comment boards to post your complaints or opinions and that is where you can make a difference.
I think we all need to be aware of what is going on in the Genealogy world that is why I sent the post.
For example issues with the cemeteries being vandalized or moved around, or what ways they are to be restored. Everyone has an opinion and it should be something closely watched and posting a message bringing attention to something happening that affects them or links to where others can get involved is one thing but the actual action or debate should be kept off list.
I don't want this list to turn in to an Ancestry Bash list. I know they have issues and I don't agree with all of their tactics. But the list we use and the webspace that stores the Delaware County site is owned by them. They do alot of good along with the bad. I would rather work with them to make it better than to completely boycott them. For one not everyone would boycott them and I would only be punishing myself from what I do like about them.
I have been a paying member for years and have found them very useful. Yes I have had issues with subscriptions being messed up, I have found many errors and have often wondered who they are paying to transcribe records. There were a few people who swore that after they started complaining rather loudly about the database in question, that they were banned or locked out of all their accounts on all the sites owned by Ancestry.
But today those people were let back into their accounts. I don't know if it was just poor timing and a coincidence or if it was intentional because I was not locked out personally.
But in the past two days I do believe Ancestry has realized they made a huge mistake when they started getting all the complaints and almost every Genealogy site, blog, newsletter etc. had an opinion on the matter.
Those of you who are interested in a current update on the issue should do a new search on the topic and find out what they have done so far. Those who have major issues with the way your subscriptions were handled should keep after them about getting it rectified. I would imagine that a few blogs or lists have been started for those who have problems that need settled. If not a list could be created but it shouldn't take place on this list that is sponsored and monitored by "big brother".
The link below is one of many that has some updated information about the database and how it has been removed from Ancestry.

It's hard to boycott, since they have the majority of what we are looking for...

So how do we fight back, short of removing our work from online pages, assuming that we can? If it weren't for those of us who do the individual research, places like Ancestry would have very little to offer. We need to find a method that works, then each of us unite together with other genealogists, historical societies and smaller groups to stand against the monopolies! Genealogy should be FREE access to anyone who is researching and not made to pay for access to things that are already public record.
I know that I had asked for them to merge 2 accounts of mine (free access, but one had a mistaken password) and they would not do it. So if I sign out, I may not be able to sign back in. Also I know of others who have filed complaints with them and nothing was done about the situations. So again, how do we fight back?
