I just noticed, in Melissa's obituary it says she died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stout. So she was living with Frederick and Mary Applegate's daughter Etta??? Or is this another Joe Stout?? I didn't realize that until now. :)

I don't know who Peter's first wife was. I didn't trace them back that far. I do believe it is the same Peter that was in the county home.
Below are the obituaries for Dawson and Malissa. I will attach photos of their tombstones too if I can find them.

DAWSON M. STATLER ENDS LIFE WITH ACID
Dawson M. Stattler, 73, seated himself in his automobile at his home, three miles northwest of Muncie, at 7 p.m. Friday, and drained the contents of a bottle of carbolic acid. His lifeless body was found a short time afterwards by his wife, Mrs. Sarah E. Stattler. No motive has yet been assigned for the act.
After eating his supper Mr. Stattler left the house, taking with him a glass of water and, presumably, an ounce bottle of the acid. After pouring the acid into the glass he drank the entire amount.
After a preliminary investigation Coroner Frant (sic) T. Kilgore intimated that he would return a verdict of suicide. The body was removed to the Meeks mortuary to be prepared for burial. It will be taken to the home tonight.
Monday at 10:30 a.m. is the time set for the funeral at Pleasant Run Church, followed by burial in Jones Cemetery. Besides the widow, surviving are a step-daughter, Mrs. Fred Engle, of Muncie; a sister, Mrs. Lissie Applegate, of Cammack, and a brother, Samuel, of Gaston.
Mr. Stattler was a fence and ditch contractor.

Albert (Bert) was Mary Alice's son, and my Great Grandma Pearl's half brother. I don't know who his father was. I have not been able to locate him on the 1880 census either. I don't know if Mary went off to have him or if the enumerator just missed him.
William and Lavinia are listed as Bert's parents on his marriage transcripts in Delaware County. I think they helped raise him but I don't think they actually adopted him. I haven't come across any court documents for an adoption or a charge of bastardy against his father. So they may have just kept it quiet.
I know it was common knowledge that he was Mary's son. My mother knew he was her grandmother's brother and he was listed as Mary's son in her obituary.

Thanks so much for the information. That really cleared some things up. One question. Was Albert a son of William and Lavinia or a grandson. I have his as the son of Mary Alice before she married John W. Brown. Is this correct? In the 1900 Census he is listed as a step-son of John Brown.

Question concerning Melissa and Dawson Stattler. You said that they were siblings. In the 1860 Delaware Co., In census, I found Peter and Maria Stotler. Their ages indicate that he was married before Maria. In the household, Dawson age 5 and Lucy Ann age 3, but no Melissa. There are also three older children. Are they from his first marriage? Then in the 1870 Delaware Co., IN census, Peter Stotler age 60 in the county asylum (The same Peter Stotler)?

The family that I am researching for my son-in-law descends through Fredrick Applegate, oldest son of Parker Applegate and Jemima Bogue. Fredrick married Mary Jane Newhouse. Their daughter married Etta married Joseph Stout. That is my line. Etta Applegate and Eliza Applegate are 1st cousins once removed.

Yes Eliza Ann Applegate was the daughter of William and Lavinia Slater Applegate. She was born September 12, 1862 and died December 8, 1952. She was their youngest daughter. Lavinia's maiden name is Slater, not Stattler. I have often wondered if Lavinia and Mary Slater are sisters. Thomas Jefferson Applegate married Mary Slater.
William and Lavinia's son Louis married Melissa Stattler/Stottler/Stotler and their daughter Angeline married Dawson Stattler. Melissa and Dawson were siblings. They were the children of Peter and Maria Stattler. I have found three variations of the name on different documents and tombstones. I have seen several trees online that have Lavinia's name as Stattler and I am not sure how they came by that.??
Eliza Ann Applegate married Garrett Gibson June 4, 1881 in Delaware County. Garrett was the son of James R. and Huldah Ann Jones Gibson. He was born June 10, 1860 and died March 7, 1937.
Garrett and Eliza had three daughters, Bessie Gibson born March 6, 1882 md Charles Haisley October 17, 1903 and Blanche Gibson born October 9, 1887 md Herbert F. Bogue November 29, 1905. Lola Gibson born July 29, 1890 and died August 13, 1890.
I don't think Herbert Bogue was a brother of Jemima or Prudence because of the age difference, but wonder if he was a nephew or grandson of one of their brothers.
I don't have any info on the Bogue family but do have more information on the William and Lavinia Applegate line. I descend from their daughter Mary Alice Applegate Brown.
Hope this helps,
Gina

Jemima Bogue was born in 1819 and Prudence was born in 1817. I do not have brothers listed for them, so I do not know the answer to your question. I will try to find time to do the research. I do have an Eliza Applegate who was born in 1864 in Delaware Co., IN. Would that be your Eliza Applegate? I show that she married a Gibson, but I do not have information on him. I would love to have info, if this is the same Eliza Applegate. My Eliza is the d/o William and Lavinia Statler Applegate. Please let me know.

I will try to help if you can give me more details. What was your father's birth date? What was your mother's name?
If you don't know his birth date, what was his approximate age? What year did he die? Where were you born and what year?
