Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear Researchers
We apologize for problems earlier this week with our databases. Access to the Heritage Quest database from home is still very much a service we offer. In the near future, there will be improvements on the Local History and Genealogy webpage. We will also be adding new databases. We think you all will be very pleased with the results!

Subject: [INDELAWA-L] MPL Court Records
Hey everyone,
I know there have been several people asking about the MPL Court Records, wanting to know if they are still online and how to find them.
The MPL updated their site, so the links were moved. They are a little tricky to find now but they are still there. It took me a few minutes to navigate through the new site but I did find them.
The link to the Court Records Database is now located at the following link. You may want to update the link in your favorites.
http://www.munpl.org/default.asp?PageIndex=423
I had the new page linked to the Delaware County Website but it must have been moved again since then, because the link no longer works. I will update the link on the County site again.
I will try to keep an active link on the Delaware County site to the MPL Court Records.
To find them on the Library site you need to click on the "Adults" tab and then go to "Local History/Genealogy" Then go to the "Digital Resource Library"
As for the link to sign in to Heritage Quest from home, I cannot find it today. I found it a few weeks ago so I don't know where it was moved to.
I believe that they are still making Heritage Quest available at home with a current Library card. Hopefully Mary Lou or someone from the library will be able to guide us to that page or let us know if it is no longer a service they are offering.
Hope this helps.

Hey Everyone!
I found the link to Heritage Quest!
http://www.munpl.org/default.asp?PageIndex=436
I did a search on the MPL site for Heritage Quest and it pulled it up.
Click on "Adults" then "Subscription Sites" and that page lists all the resources.
You need a current MPL Library Card to use Heritage Quest through their site.
If you are not local you may want to check with your Public Library and see if they have an account with Heritage Quest.
When I moved to Knoxville, TN the Public Library had the same service available. It will just depend on your library and if they offer it.
Hope this helps,

GenFest plans are in full swing once again and this time for 2007. Our host next year will be Marion Public Library and it promises to be the biggest yet.
Rhonda Stoffer, Marion's Indiana Room librarian has a list a mile long of people she's inviting to participate in order to satisfy your genealogy needs. And, for fun, she's lined up several vendors who'll have gift items and other niceties for genealogists . Nice touch, Rhonda!
Marion has ample parking, is attached to the main library AND has the historical society's museum right on site. Visit their site for those vendors she's gotten confirmation on and for overnight accommodations. Keep watching for more additions!

Hi - Were obituaries published in newspapers in 1874 in Delaware County
paper? If so,what newspaper. I need an obit for a Henry L. Remington (wife
Elizabeth Tuttle) who died Feb 9, 1874. I'm hoping to obtain info on his parents
and other kin and location previously in Ohio. Are there any Remington or
Tuttle researchers who might have info on Henry? Thx Carol
I made a request also for 1874 obit and got answer that there were no
newspapers available for 1874. This answer came from the following
organization who might have other records which might help, other

Am sharing my info I've obtained on Merriman/Poor marriage in case
anyone else out there is researching same. Will save you some time!
Rachel Poor was one of 12 children born to Thomas C. Poor and his 2nd
wife Martha (Haynes) Poor of Union Twp, Delaware Co. IN. If any
cousins, descendents read this and want to contact me, please do! I'd
love to share family information.
Rachel Alma POOR b.Sept 1869 in Union Twp, Delaware Co. Indiana
was only 5 when her father Thomas C. Poor died. Rachel stayed with
her widowed mother and helped care for the house. Her mother and
three sisters (Laura (Poor) Perfect and Martha J (Poor)Dougherty) and
Anna (Poor) Mason moved to Butte City, Silver Bow County in the early
1890’s. It appears that Rachel Poor went with them. She met and
married (ca. 1895) 1st Robert Osborn MERRIMAN from Jefferson City,
Jefferson County, MT. Robert O. Merriman was b. 20 July 1869, the son
of Nathaniel Merriman and Olive C. Skinner of Jefferson City, MT. His
father Nathaniel was a miner but also very involved in politics. A
short sketch of Robert O. Merriman’s father Nathaniel reads:
“Nathaniel Merriman was born Aug 9, 1833 in Middletown, Holmes
County, OH. Died Feb 21, 1892 . Nathaniel moved to Porter County,
Indiana in infancy where he spent his youth. He married Olive
Skinner. They started for the Rockies on May 1, 1860 settling first
in Central City, Colorado, where he was appointed Post Master by
President Lincoln. They located in Jefferson City, Jefferson Co.
Montana in 1864. He was a member of the 1st Legislature of Colorado
and both the 1st and 2nd Legislature of Montana. He was Post Master
of Jefferson City, Jefferson Co. under President Grant. He was a
member of the Constitutional Convention in 1885. He served several
terms as County Recorder for Jefferson County, MT. “
Robert O. Merriman was one of 7 children born to this marriage. His
mother and father divorced and Olive took two of the Merriman girls
to live with her and her new husband ‘Ford’ (Ferdinand) Dell, a
butcher in Jefferson City, MT while her first husband Nathaniel kept
five of the Merriman children with him. In the 1880 census they show
as two separate households. One very interesting note is that one of
Robert O. Merriman’s sisters is ‘Montana Pearl Merriman’ b. ca 1867
who goes on later to marry a Charles Zebulon Pond (Sr). This marriage
produced Charles Zebulon Pond (Jr.) who marries none other than Ionee
Perfect, the daughter of Laura (Poor) Perfect. (Rachel’s date of
marriage was estimated by her statement in 1900 census that she’d
been married 5 years.)
In June 8, 1900 when the census was done, Rachel and Robert were
living on Fremont Street in ‘South Butte Township’ Butte City, MT.
with two children.
In 1901, Rachel and Robert O. Merriman lived at 316 Shields St.,
Butte City, MT. This street intersects Madison Street which is where
her sister Martha Jane (Poor) Dougherty and her mother Martha J Poor
were living in 1900. Also living in Butte City was her other sister
Anna (Poor) Mason. In Feb.1907 Rachel (Poor) Merriman loses her
mother Martha Poor, and in December 1907 she loses her sister Anna
(Poor) Mason. Then in 1912 the loss of her 18 yr. old nephew Franklin
Floyd Dougherty. Her husband, Robert Osborn Merriman was a miner and
worked for Leasing South Glengarry Mine. In 1902 this Robert Osborn
Merriman is listed in the Butte City Directory living at 413 Walker
Avenue, Butte City.
1910 is a bit of a mystery. Robert O. Merriman is found saying he is
‘single’ and age 43 and living as a lodger with 20 other lodgers in
Butte City, Mt. Did they separate? It's unknown. Later Rachel made
arrangements upon his death.
After three family deaths, Rachel suffers yet another. On 20 April,
1914 her husband Robert O. Merriman dies of Pneumococcic meningitis
with the contributing factor of acute lobar pneumonia. They had been
married about 17 years. Her husband was only 44 yrs. and 9 mos old at
time of death. They are listed living at: 825 Highland Avenue, Butte
City, MT. She had her husbands remains taken to his home in Jefferson
City, Jefferson Co. MT for burial. Rachel (Poor) Merriman, a 47-yr
old widow is listed as working as a waiter in the 1916 Butte City
directory.
The children of Rachel and Robert O. Merriman:
Robert Nathaniel Merriman b. 15 July 1898 in Butte City, Silver Bow
MT, d. May 1964 Tacoma, Pierce Co. WA
Charles Phenimore Merriman b.ca. April 1900 d.23 Oct 1900 from
cerebral effusion (swelling/bleeding to the brain) (still an infant)
Millard Phenimore Merriman b. 26 July 1901. d. March 25, 1981
Great Falls, Cascade County, MT.
Robert Nathaniel Merriman, Rachel’s and Robert O. Merriman's oldest
son registered for the WWI draft on September 18, 1918. At that
time he says he is 20, and is living in a hotel in Shoshone County,
Idaho working as a miner for the Hercules Mining Company. He states
that his mother Rachel Burrell is living in Logan, Gallatin Co. MT.
Rachel remarried about 1918. She married William Wallace Burrell
b. 18 June 1877 in Manhattan, Gallatin County, MT. He was one of 5
children of Joseph Robinson Burrell and his wife Matilda J. Spafford.
She and her 2nd husband go to live in Logan, Gallatin County, MT and
appear there in the 1920 census with her then 18 yr. old son Millard
Merriman from her 1st marriage. He states he is a public laborer and
works for the Story Rock Crusher in Logan, MT. His WWI draft card
said he was of medium build and listed gray/brown for hair and eye
color and he signed his middle name as ‘Phenimore’. Her other son
Robert Merriman is not in the household. in fact married at about age
21 and struck out on his own. He reappears in the State of
Washington. Rachel listed herself as age 41 but in fact she was
actually more like 51. She had met and married a man younger than
herself. He was just 43 then so perhaps she had purposely misstated
her age when they first met to appear closer in age. Her husband is
working with ‘coal’. (It’s difficult to read the word that follows
the word coal.)
In 1930 Rachel (Poor) (Merriman) Burrell and her 2nd husband are
still living in Logan, Gallatin Co. MT, they own their own home
valued at $1000 and Wallace Burrell works as a laborer with the
railroad. Once again she misstates her age by quite a few years. By
this time she and her 2nd husband had been married about 12 years.
Unfortunate circumstances hit her again when her youngest son
Millard Merriman is found incarcerated in the Washington State
Penitentiary in Walla, Walla, WA in April, 1930 and working as a
prison cook. Records for this year have been destroyed so I was
unable to find out more information about this. It appears both of
her boys (Millard and Robert N. Merriman) left Montana for
Washington. Her son Robert Nathaniel Merriman now 31 and married
apparently went to work as a ‘miner’ for a large tunnel/dam being
built in the Potlatch section, Mason County, Washington because he
appears in the same April, 1930 census living in a lodging house of
all tunnel or dam workers. Maybe good wages were being offered and he
could commute home. I have not found a record of who he married, but
he married about 1919 and had at least one son, whom he also named
Robert Merriman born 17 April 1924 in Washington and died 8 Nov. 1987
in Parkland, Pierce County, Washington.
Her 2nd husband Wallace Burrell died 9 Feb. 1939 at the age of 62.
I have found no record of the death of Rachel (Poor) (Merriman)
Burrell. If she was alive at the time of her 2nd husbands death,
they would have been married for 21 years.
Millard Merriman, her incarcerated son, last found in the State of
Washington, apparently is released at some point and returns to
Montana, because he lived to be 79 and died on 25 March 1981 in Great
Falls, Cascade County, Montana. His obituary read:
Millard Merriman died in a nursing home age 79 was was buried in
Highland Cemetery. He was born in 1901 in Madison County. He was
reared there and lived in Clancy and Jefferson City in Jefferson
County, and in Logan in Gallatin County. He took up the painting
trade and later lived and worked in San Francisco and Tacoma, WA. He
married Vearle Lowman, a native of Darby, April 22, 1944 in Tacoma.
The couple lived in Tacoma and Seattle WA until 1955, when they
returned to Montana and settled in the Bitteroot Valley. Two years
later they came to Great Falls. Vearle Merriman died in 1979.
Surviving are stepdaughters Mrs. Joe (Betty) Chaon of Great Falls,
Mrs. Clayton (Jean) Warner, and Mrs. Charles (Marie) Thomas of
Hamilton, Mrs. Ray (Florence) Fadness of Sunnyside, WA. , Mrs. Mike
(Velma) Hargraves of Fremont, CA; stepsons Leo Norman of Fairview,
Ted Norman of Columbia Falls, Dan Norman of Sunnyside WA and Earl
Norman of San Dimas, CA.; 31 step grandchildren; 40 step great-
grandchildren and two step great-great-grandchildren.
If you come across this on a gravestone it refers to this
organization. They apparently provided benefits that included
ensuring that no member was ever buried w/o a gravestone.
WOMEN OF WOODCRAFT
The Women of Woodcraft was formed as an auxiliary organization to the
Woodmen of the World in 1897. They covered nine western states and
for a time their headquarters were in Leadville, Colorado. In 1917,
the Women of Woodcraft changed their name to Neighbors of Woodcraft. T
The Women of Woodcraft was a benefit or benevolent society, which
meant that the members made monthly or quarterly contributions and
agreed to provide for each other in the event of a sudden death in
the family.
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these societies were quite
common. With the advent of organized life insurance companies (many
of which grew out of the benevolent societies) and Social Security in
the 1930’s, many of the benevolent societies disbanded. B
The Neighbors of Woodcraft is still around though; now they are based
in Oregon City, Oregon. They sell life insurance and provide monthly
benefits and scholarships to orphans of members.
Still looking for info on (male) Dougherty who married Martha Jane
Poor b. Oct 1859 in Eaton, Union Twp, Delaware County. They either
married in IN or she met him in MT, and it's now looking like he
wasn't a Wm C. Dougherty but possibly a J.A. Dougherty, or ? They
married ca 1892. Had two children born in Silver Bow Co. MT: Floyd
Franklin Dougherty b. Aug 1895 (struck by lightning and died at 18),
Sylvia Dougherty b. April 1893. This male Dougherty father must have
died by 1900 as in 1900 census she is living as a widow.
Do youe have a Franklin Daughtery or a Olive D in your line/
