Sharon, I have recently come across a F. A. Bartelt who married one of my relatives Alice A Hoover in Exira Iowa. I was fortunate to get Alice's father's biography from a very helpful fellow online. They had one son, George, in 1915. By the way, it's rather coincidental that Alice had an Aunt named Elloween.
Remember:
The Yorktown/Mt. Pleasant Historical Alliance will meet again Tuesday July 18 at 7 PM.
We'll continue discussion and view photos of old buildings along Rt 32.

Muncie News Friday June 12, 1885
LAID AT REST. THE REMAINS OF JOHN R. JOHNSTON INTERRED AT BEECH GROVE CEMETERY. No new facts in the Johnston suicide have come to light except that the pistol with which the deed was done has been found, it being a new one with only one cartridge discharged. It now comes to light that a girl living at the house heard the sound of a discharged pistol about 8 o'clock, but as a man employed about the place had been shooting rats at different times for several days, no notice was taken of the report. If the deed was committed at this time the body was bereft of life for some two and a half hours before it was found. The friends of the deceased have arrived and were in attendance at the funeral which took place from the residence of John Marsh at 2:20 this afternoon. The body was taken care of and the services conducted under the auspices of the members of Muncie Commandery, No., 128, assisted by Rev J. W. Birchmore of Grace Episcopal church and Rev T Stabler of the M. E. Church !
Mr. J.F. Johnston arrived in the city last evening to attend the funeral of his son.

The Muncie Daily News, Wednesday Evening, March 25, 1885
FATAL FUN. WILLIAM HAINES MEETS AN UNTIMELY DEATH. BISHOP SCOTT GIVES HIMSELF UP TO THE OFFICERS. Coroner Charles W. Smith received a telegram this morning from Eaton which required his presence there to investigate the death of a young man living near that place. The facts of the sad tragedy are as follows: A few evenings since William Haines, a young man about 17 yrs of age, in company with one or two others (Frank Poor was one), were going to a neighbor's residence to pass the night with a sick friend, and while passing the house of Bishop Scott told him that they would 'steal some of his chickens' when they returned. Scott, concluding to have some fun with the boys, watched for their coming, but in vain. But the next night, which was Tues night, he was again at his post in his barn, armed with an old horse pistol, awaiting the coming of the boys whom he sought to frighten. It was quite early in the evening when the young men approached and entered the hen-coop and secure!
d a chicken each, intending to take them to their owner and make him a present of them, but as they were leaving the barn, Mr. Scott thought he would scare them by firing his pistol, but it failed to go off and he supposed that the boys were going from him, so he made a second attempt to discharge the weapon and it went off, this time with deadly effect. The two young men had turned and were coming toward the concealed man, and William Haines received the contents of the pistol in his neck and died in a few minutes afterward. The affair cast a gloom over the citizens of that vicinity and the friends of both parties have the sympathy of the public. Mr. Scott at once gave himself up to the officers and was brought to this city this morning and placed in jail to await the examination of the coroner who will render a verdict this evening. From the facts known there is no doubt but what the man will be released from custody. The affair has already preyed upon his mind and there !
are some fears as to him losing his reason. The whole affair is a very
unfortunate one indeed, and is another link in the chain of accidents of the careless handling of loaded firearms. (Note: William Haynes, age 17 was the son of John Haynes and Catharine Ashenfelder of Union Twp, Delaware County. Frank Poor, his cousin from family of Thomas C. Poor was also the other boy present stealing chickens as a prank. Bishop Scott died tragically from typhoid fever, the case being dismissed as he was too sick to stand trial. Other reports say the 3 families Haynes, Poor and Scotts were all amicable neighbors on good terms.)

Thomas C. Poor died 25 April 1874. The family farm in Union Twp had to be auctioned off for debts on 28 June 1875. This was handled by Martha Poor's brother Wright Haynes. In 1900 census Martha stated only '6 of her children were still living.' I cannot find graves for any of them, Thomas C. Poor the father or any of the rest. Has anyone got a cemetery book or live close enough to Union twp cemeteries to help me? If anyone has any info on who the daughters married, or any info on the children, I'd like to have it. There might have been a 1st marriage of Charles V. Poor to an Ollie Clark 7 Sept 1888 with one child born (fm) Ollie Poor 14 Oct 1891. I cannot find graves for Ollie Clark Poor the mother or the Ollie Poor daughter to determine when they died. This was all Delaware County and they lived in Union Twp. on 120 acre farm 1874 plat map in upper right hand corner by railroad track. I would also like to know how Martha the mother and two of her daughters ended up in Butte!

If your family has roots in Estill Co. KY, you may want to attend the Estill County Backporch Homecoming. This year it will be held July 26th through July 29th, 2006 in at the Estill County History Center & Library. The link for more info is:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyestill/ . There is a link for registration right on the front page of the site.
This will be my 5th year attending and each year I find new info. Everyone associated with the History Center and Library is knowledgeable, and more than willing to help you find your ancestors.
This is a great opportunity to meet with people you may have chatted with online about your ancestors. Last year they had about 130 people stop in during the homecoming and 850 from 27 different states throughout the year. So, the chance of finding someone researching your family line is strong. Everyone signs in and lists the family they are searching for so you may find a good address for someone researching the same lines.
They have many written resources, census records, family records, and other publications, etc. for Estill and surrounding counties.
One personal example I have is that I had the directions to an old family cemetery, but I had never been. I gave the directions to someone from Louisiana who attended the Backporch Homecoming and he went to the cemetery. The next year he took me to the cemetery, and we have developed a great working partnership in our quest for family history. We are both from the same lines, way way back.
You never know who you will meet or what you will find out. So, if you've got vacation time or even a day off, think about coming to the Homecoming and supporting the History Center in Estill County.
SURNAMES THAT I AM RESEARCHING INCLUDE: Alcorn, Baker, Barker, Burns, Cain, Coyle, Cotton, Dietz, Gabbard, Gum, Horn, Lamb, Logsdon, Murray, McCreary, Powell, Quick, Rose, Richardson, Still, Winkler, White, Walton, Warford, and Woodyard (among others).
Thanks,
Vickie
