Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
greetings listers,
Sandi has added a few JETMORE names to Elm Ridge and Beech Grove burial
records.
I'm giving you the Beech Grove page so you all can see how many letters of
the alphabet have NO names/burials! You can see how lopsided this looks.
More names are needed so we can fix this situation! - NINE letters of the
alphabet with no burials posted. ;-)
GO TEAM!, er, hm, I meant to say would you be so kind as to contribute some
names/burials? I know I have a couple that I need to post to the L section.

i just dealt with them on a personal matter and my request was handled
professionally and promptly... i was given instructions by phone as to how to
submit my request and the response and documents came exactly as they stated within
the shortest time frame stated... i'm sorry you have had such bad
experiences, but from my perspective it has been one of the best public agencies I've
dealt with... i can't remember the woman's name who helped me over the phone,
but my impression was that the matter would be handled by whoever opened the
request once they received it in the mail... hang in there... marsha

That is definitely true about who serves you.
There are times I have just called and received the information over the
phone, other times they make me come into the office.
Which was the case Monday. They made me come up there to search for Phillip
Hahn. I think it depends on the person and the mood they are in. <G>

Shirley,
I could see the information that was in the death record book, and I
requested that information. I didn't get it, but I didn't notice the
omission of father's name and cause of death until I had left the
office. I was on my way to Montpelier to visit my aunt, and I was
late. The woman who waited on me was not anxious to do so, nor was she
cordial.
I remember that polio outbreak, if you mean the one in the mid-1950's. My
grandmother's sibs were two generations earlier, and I'm not sure if the
disease was even identified at that time. Perhaps it was an epidemic of
some type of respiratory ailment. The one credible clue is that my
grandmother's brother (the only other survivor of this time) was left with
a lame leg.

Sharon,
I noted the subject line reads "certificate". Certificates show a given amount of information. Be sure to ask for "death records" - not certificates and indicate you want ALL information available.
Death records in the Health Dept. are, without doubt, the best and most complete resource. However, they are only as complete at the person furnishing the information could or would make it. Some information just wasn't known. Sometimes a doctor would furnish it, sometimes a child or sibling or husband...sometimes even a neighbor or landlord. There was also a time when deaths and births were not reported by law. You can see the problem. If you were clear in your request and didn't get it, it probably wasn't there. I've never run into anyone up there that wasn't friendly and helpful and I've always gotten more information than I expected.
And interesting note - I can tell you this about Polio: My brother had it during the outbreak. They didn't know how it was spreading at first and so schools, swimming pools, theaters, etc were being closed. One thing they did find out was that some families were predisposed to it just like other things....some were more susceptible. My parents were told to keep the rest of us out of public places. Iron lungs were saving lives but they were in short supply of the demand. My father, an engineer, was building emergency iron lungs from 50 gal. drums during that time. What you're saying is entirely possible - several in your family may have perished from Polio.
Cemetery records will often show cause of death too.

I have visited the office in person while on visits to family. On my last
trip, I wanted to learn if the records indicated the causes of deaths for
my paternal grandmother's siblings. I had heard from my aunt that several
young people in the family succumbed to polio, and I wanted to know if her
impression was correct. I also wanted to prove the family relationship. I
understand that old death records are not always precise about cause of
death, but it would have been nice to have all the information
available. That is what I requested and didn't get.

Hello,
Would someone be able to tell me if the Braun House (in the postcard/picture)
is the same as the Braun Hotel? If so, does anyone remember, or know, how the
rooms were numbered? I would like to try and pinpoint Room 22 D according to
the picture of the building. I think I was told that the building no longer
exists, could someone confirm that for me?
Thanks for any help anyone could provide.

Sharon,
Checking the city directories I have I show only Hotel Braun...so I'm assuming they are one and the same. The bldg no longer exists.
