Subject: [inrush] Ellis Island, NY Immigrant Records Online
> Ellis Island Database Introduced
> Immigrant Records Will Be Available Online
>
> By HANNAH WOLFSON
> .c The Associated Press
>
> SALT LAKE CITY (April 17) - Tracking ancestors who entered the country
through Ellis Island used to mean poring through endless reels of microfilm.
>
> Now, it can be as simple as a few clicks of a computer mouse.
>
> On Tuesday, Ellis Island officials and the Mormon Church introduced a
database containing arrival records for the 22 million immigrants who
entered the port of New York from 1892 to 1924.
>
> The database is expected to be up and running on Wednesday. When fully
operational in about a month, the database, which includes 70 percent of all
U.S. arrivals recorded during that period, will be available both to Ellis
Island visitors and on the Internet.
>
> ``This is the tool everybody's waiting for to go back to Ellis Island and
find their ancestors,'' said Wayne Metcalfe, who helped direct the project
for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
>
> At Ellis Island on Tuesday, 103-year-old Marinus deNooyer of Wayne, N.J.,
and his family members visited and checked out their family history.
DeNooyer emigrated from the Netherlands at 7.
>
> The searchable database includes immigrants' names, their port of origin,
age, nationality, hometown and marital status.
>
> Visitors to the new American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis
Island can take home printouts of the information, and purchase a copy of
the original immigration records and a photo of the ship that brought their
ancestors to the United States. Online visitors will be able to order the
records and photos in about a month.
>
> Until now, Ellis Island information was only available on microfilm at the
National Archives in Washington, or at the Mormon Church's Family History
Library in Salt Lake City. The church encourages members to try to identify
ancestors, so they can be baptized into the faith after death.
>
> Over the past several years, church volunteers have worked with the Statue
of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation to compile the information from manifests
immigrants filled out on board ship.
>
> Stephen Briganti, president and chief executive of the foundation, said he
used the new database to track down his grandmother.
>
> ``There's great interest now in finding one's family history, where they
came from, what their life was like, what diseases they might have had,''
Briganti said. ``This is certainly going to help that process along because
this really is the story of America.''

Hi,
I am looking for anyone who is researching the Horn family in Delaware
county. My Husband's ggrandparents were Lawrence and Luella (Holden) Horn.
Lawrence died in 1932 and Luella in 1931. Some of their children were Ruth,
Stephen, Grace, and Blanche. Are their any descendants of this family out
there?
Liz
Hi all you listers. Some on this list,I think.Wanted to know about the
Smells,I have an Ephraim Smell the son of Philip who married an Rebecca
[Doolittle] Smell, from W Va in 1855.Settled first in Henry Co.,then
moved to Delaware Co.In. I have a little more info. Please email me.
I am looking for information on my Lee family that lived in Delaware County.
My ggggrandmother was Elizabeth Lee born in 1845 in Delaware County. I have a
certificate from the late 1800's that was handwritten for her that states
that she was married in her father's home in Delaware County in February of
1861/62. (She married Benjamin Franklin Smell)
I believe I have found her family on the 1850 census and her parents were
Daniel and Eleanor (I believe - Anderson) Lee. They were originally from Pike
County, Ohio.
I have also found info that Daniel died in Muncie (year unknown) and had a
sister named Elizabeth who married a James Starr in Ohio. I have found other
info that states that Elizabeth descended from Richard Henry Lee, the signer
of the Declaration of Independence. I believe Elizabeth and Daniel's parents
were Daniel (maybe) and Margaret (Chadd) Lee from West Virginia, but beyond
that I cannot make the connection to Richard Henry Lee.
I have found a Dan Lee in the Coroner's Report found at Ball State, that died
November 25, 1874 in Delaware County, but the township is not mentioned.
Does anyone know if death certificates are available from that year? Or does
anyone have info on any of these Lee's?
I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks, Candice Sebring-Kelber
Just a note:
Ancestry.com has mention of a book called: Unlocking the Secrets in Old Photographs. I just checked the electronic catalog with
our library system and they have it for LOAN.
Just in case you didn't know, most libraries have a 'wish list' where you can put in a request for a book purchase.
Another source for books like this might be your local genealogical society, historical society and universities.

This is a great book I copied the pages for description of clothes and years

Is anyone out there able to research census for Kokomo In. from 1888 up till the next few years? I am looking for the parents of Florda C. Borden. She also went by the name Cora, Cord, and Cordelia. She was raised and died in Kokomo. I had also heard that her parents may have came from Layfeat In. but not sure? My mom said that her parents names were Gorden and Lula Borden but Ancestors.com doesnt seem to have info on these names. So they may have been nick names? Im looking for Florda's parents, bd and marriage if I can? Will have to go from there to find out where they died perhaps in Kokomo cemetery?? Not sure, will cross that bridge when I come to I guess? Thanks everyone. ..Jeff Bright
I am sorry if I made a few of you misunderstand my meaning about the marriage certificate problems I had. Two out three certificates I got back from Deleware Co were alright. One had a report with it that states a bride's parents name. I sent along with my request the number for that report as I did not have the name of the bride's parents and needed it very much. They cut the two documents in two and the "important" part was lost. In Fountain County and Carroll County what I got back was pretty much the same thing I sent them in my request. It was a hand written doucment cut in about a 6" square that said they were married on such and such a date. The same info I sent them. I could not use it for documentation for my family tree as it had the same info I gave them and I could not use it to frame or put in our family tree book. One document, Im not sure what it said as it was so dark you could not see it. I even scaned it and blew it up to see if I could read it and I sti!
ll could not. My point to others is... If all you want is to find info on your loved ones I have found it smarter to deal with those who will make copies of the certificate for say.. 15 cents instead of paying over a dollar to the County Clerk's. The reason I went though the County Clerk's office was because a gentleman at Bracken Libary had told me that he was sending me the copies he had and if I wanted something nice enough to frame (which two out of the three I recieved from Delawere Co. was) then I need to get them from the County Clerk's office. But the two I got back from Carroll County and Fountain County were no better than what Bracken Libary sent me for fee. I did however send back the certificate from Deleware that cut the report in half showing the bride's parents name and asked them to please send this report as it was even more important than the marriage certificate itself. The ones from Fountain Co and Carroll county I couldnt use at all. They were a waist!
of my time and my money. So if you want just info on a marriage I still suggest going through the services that cost only a few cents to send you the copy because many County Clerk's office send you no better document at a much higher cost.
This is just something I wanted to share with everyone. I sent away to some of Indiana's county clerk's office for wedding certificates. I made it clear to all that I wanted something that could be proudly placed in a family tree scrap book. I sent away to Deleware Co. for three different wedding certificates. One was the actual copy, it was dark but you could barely make it out. The other looked like it was just writen that day and only showed half of the certificate. The other certificate was also cut in half and the information that I needed the most stating the bride's parents name was cut off. I made that clear to them that it was important I had that part and still it was cut off. You can see at the top of the page where it was cut in the middle of writing and only shows the bottom of the top half of the page. The certificate I sent away for in Fountain County Indiana was the saddest of all. It looked as though they had taken a new form and hand written it out. Then !
the page was cut in half and folded in three places. I had provided them a large office envolop to send the certificate in so a whole page would not have to be folded even once and made it clear I wanted a certificate that could be framed. The copy I got back from Carroll County was crooked on the page and ink smuges were on it so bad you can barely see it at all. From now on if this is what county clerks send, I will pay the .15 cents from other places for a copy and skip the $1.25 per copy for what the clerks send out. I sent all 5 certificates back to their county clerks and told them what I thought. They were not even worth keeping. I just wanted to share this with all of you so no one else would be taken in this way. The copies I just got back from Ball State were in much better condition and at least you could read these. And by the way...... The ones from Ball State were FREE! I now only have 3 of the five I wanted but Id rather go without the last three than to p!
ay for something I cant even read. Be careful all when ordering from the county clerks, Im sure not all are like this but for my first time of doing something like this, it was very disapointing. ..Jeff
Is it possible for someone to look up the name Lloyd Fuller in the 1920 Munice census.

Can anyone tell me if they know of any children born to BAYLESS & RACHEL BRIGHT other than..
John W. Bright
James A. Bright
Joseph Bright
Harriet J. Bright
Hannah E. /Bright/ Collier
In the 1900 census, Rachel said she had 7 children with six living. This means two children are unaccounted for. They may have been born in another county in Indiana in 1880 or slightly before. If anyone can help me out or know of anyone that belongs to this line, please let me know. ..Jeff Bright
Listers,
I forwarded a note posted on an Illinois list about 'Capitalists' and notified the person who originally wrote the note that I had
done so. I also gave that person credit. Now I'm informed that I have not only failed to have that in the subject line in my
personal note to her but it is against Roots rules to forward other people's notes ..."copy rights and all". As a writer, it was my
understanding that as long as you give the 'author' credit, you can quote them but perhaps Roots doesn't even allow this. We need
to know - otherwise, we can't share bits of information between lists without rewriting it and taking the credit ourselves. Would
someone please clarify this for me in regards to Rootsweb.
In addition, if it isn't allowed, please accept my sincerest apologies and I take it back. *g*

On another list in Illinois, the question came up as to what the occupation for some people is when listed as a "capitalist". I've
not run into this before but somewhere along the line we're bound to see it. One of the listers came back with this, which I found
not only interesting, but helpful. Read on -

<< Capitalist >>
First appeared 1792
1 : a person who has capital esp. invested in business; broadly : a person
of wealth.
After years of working on the farm and other economic ventures many would
retire to town and become lenders to others including family members. Most
lived off payments made by family members for the purchase of the family farm
and other investments etc.
That is probably what they are indicating by Capitalist. He likely was a
hard working individual and attained the capital by the sweat of his brow.
Many others lost their farms and all investments during the same time period
because of the risk they took.
Today many socialists use entrepreneur because they think in terms of Karl
Marx who classified individuals into the stereotypical "Capitalist". There
is a stigma attached to being a "Capitalist" for those of Socialist and
Communist schools. Who would rid us of personal ownership and centralize the
state.
entrepreneur: one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business
or enterprise

Jeff from Andrew. I remember Lonnie Holman. My mother had a grocery store on
the corner of Hoyt and 15th. We lived catty-corner across the street from
the World's Fair, a Honky Tonk owned and run by Carl Ely. This covered the
years 1935, 36, 37 and 38. My Dan, Andrfew Gilland, Sr. worked at Ball Bros.
He was a welder. I went to Lincoln grade school and Wilson Jr. High. I can
recall a few other family names. Ruby Sutton lived on 15th. I remember her.
I remember Bob Etheridge, he and I walked to school together. There was my
cousins the Rowes- Ronald was nearest ;my age. One of the Clarks (Lucinda)
married a great uncle of mine, Joseph Gilliland. Any of this ring any bells?
