Hello Kelly and all...
I took a look at the four dapper gentlemen in the picture and I'm viewing it
in a slightly different way. They are obviously posed in a railroad car
set - it doesn't look real to me anyhow......The big thing back then was to
name anything that moved, including trains, "Flyer". I'm wondering if the
name of the fake train was Muncie Flyer. The photographer could lug this
set from place to place (like at fairs and expositions) and name it Kokomo
Flyer or whatever fit.....OR maybe I was out in the Phoenix sun too long
today. LOL

Thanks Marilyn,
Thats really interesting, i never would of thought of it being a
football team.
I have a picture of four gentleman standing behind a small sign that says
Muncie
Flyer, thought i would add it to the "Step Back In Time" site and see if
anyone
recognizes any of the men shown.
Thanks again, Kelly

Kelly -
I just did some research on the
"Muncie Flyers" / "Congerville Flyers"
because my great-grandfather,
John A Phillips played for them
about 1915. According to information
sent to me by the Library at Ball State,
the Congerville Flyers were a semi-professional
football team in the Congerville area
of Delaware County.
About 1920 the first organized, professional
football league was formed. A number of teams
from the Midwest were selected to participate.
The Muncie Flyers were among those teams.....
"AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
(renamed the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE in 1922)
On September 17, 1920 in Canton Ohio a meeting was formed in an
attempt to form a professional football "league" [as opposed to
teams operating independently].
Attending the meeting were the Akron Pros; Canton Bulldogs;
Cleveland Ohio Indians; Dayton Ohio Triangles; Decatur Illinois
Staleys Athletic Club; Hammond Indiana Pros; Massillon Tigers;
Muncie Indiana Flyers; Racine [a Chicago street] Cardinals;
Rochester New York Jeffersons; Rock Island Illinios Independents;
and [the State of] Wisconsin."
The Flyers had a terrible season and folded on the
professional level within the same season. My understanding
is they continued to play on the semi-pro level for another
few years.

Ellen,
My grandmothers side of the family were Tweedys, so I have info on them. Is
there a possibilty that Sarah and Arcadias father was John F instead of
James F.? Do you have any dates on their births or where? Do you know
anymore on the parents? Where is Tweedyville located? I havent heard of it.
Please, do check you files and see who it was that you corresponded with.
The John F. I was asking about was born 1842. Johns parents were James and
Rachel Owen.
If this rings any bells, let me know, I have more.

My apologies to Kelly and the whole list if anything I said about using caps
for surnames, included in a recent posting, offended her or anyone else on
the list. I would never, never offer anything but compliments to Kelly for
all her very hard work on behalf of this great list. I was poking fun at
myself, and my forgetfullness, not at anyone else. Again, I'm sorry.
Laverne Galeener-Moore
David Baney and Sarah Dickover had six sons; George, born 1842 married
Ann Vail, Joseph born 1844 married Arcadia Tweedy 4 March 1869, Andrew
born 1848 married Sarah Tweedy 18 Sept 1870, Jacob born 1850 is the
supposed ancestor, Eli born 1854 went west and wes not heard of again,
and John born in 1858 married Malinda Faulkner 8 Ap 1879 in Randolph
Co.
Sarah Dickover Baney married a Blackleach and then Calvin Brees
Arcadia Tweedy was married to a Crawford first. Their parents were James
F Tweedy jr and Nancy Dewitt. (a note says Vermillion Co Ind ??) I
thought the family were in association with Tweedyville. I haven't done
research on the Tweedys but haave corresponded with someone in the past
who has. I could look and see in my files who it was. Hope this
helps

Hello all...
Posted in Kith and Kin section
1 - Have posted Will & Testament of William A REYNOLDS
2 - Items of genealogical interest from John Ellis' Delaware County
History - Our County :UNION TOWNSHIP includes what happened when John B
BABB was struck on the head with a rock, Jackson GREEN wrestling a deer and
other interesting stuff not included in land entries by Ellis. Just type in
"Union" in the Pico Search for this township info.
