I went to Ft. Wayne today and got the 1860 Census for my g-g-grandfather,
Jason BODLE. It says that he was 11 years old and living with a Timothy
[34 yrs] and Barbara [28 yrs] HARDWICK.
Their neighbor was a Mary J. HARDWICK who lived with the following:
S [undreadable male] 14 yrs
Timothy 9 yrs
Susan 2 yrs
I have no idea how these HARDWICK's are related to Jason BODLE. Can anyone
help?
Thanks,

Mr Gray.
I have been researching my G-G-Grandfather, Robert W. Hamilton and his
ancestors. He was born in Delaware County, Indiana about 1835-1838.
I found a James Hamilton and Sarah Hamilton on the Indiana census
1830-1840-& 1850, with children and correct names.
I think they are in fact Robert's parents. I recently acquired the book,
"Delaware
County, Indiana 1827-1850: The pioneer Period", via interlibrary loan. It
had no
mention of the Hamiltons. It did show a Hamilton township in Delaware
county.
I know from the newsgroup that you are the author of a new Delaware county
history book and would ask you if you have come across any mention of
Hamiltons in the county 1820-1840. They moved to LaPorte County
,CoolSprings,about 1840.
I also know the family left Indiana about 1855 or so heading to Illinois
then Iowa
about 1860+/-.
I don't expect you to do my research. I am just trying to find out if I am
on the right track here and know if anyone would know it is you!
Thanks very much for any info;

Hellp Steve ~
Saw your message, and I got into my "General Genealogy" binder where I have
some interesting information I have printed out in the past year or so.
According to a posting entitled "Epidemics in the U.S. 1657 - 1918, it looks
like Cholera was a major epidemic in the 1830's (Nationwide), and Asiatic
Cholera, in particular, brought over by the English. I know that this is
what killed some of my ancestors in Ohio about the same time. In addition,
there was Typhus is the Philadelphia area in 1837, as well as Yellow Fever
that started at the Schuylkill River in the1820's and spread Nationwide into
the 1840's and 50's. This epidemic was especially severe in the south.
By the way, I am originally from Delaware Co., IN....Muncie, to be exact.
Born & raised there.
Hope this was of some help to you.
Best regards,
Sarah

Can anyone tell me if there was a flu epidemic inUnion Co, OH or
Delaware or Clinton CO, IN in 1838 or 1839 (about October). I am trying
to determine WHERE James Boal and Margaret Jane Mitchell Boal are buried.
Of course, Beers in "The History of Union County Ohio" states that
James Boal departed with his family to Indiana where he died in
1828-1830. I question this because of other information to the contrary.
E.g. land and tax records in Union Co, OH for James Boal from
1820-1831cover about the time period when he supposedly departed
(1828-1830). Also a citation about in Beers, p. 435 about a light horse
(Militia) company organized about 1830 in Milford. James Boal is in the
listing.
I had been unable to find any evidence of a James Boal in Indiana until
recently when I searched the Bureau of Land Management website
(http://www.glorecords.blm.gov) which allows the searching of land
patents and Internet scanned images of original deeds for 11 states
Federal land patents under the 1820 land law. From this search I found a
deed for James Boal of Delaware Co, IN, signed 5-15-1837 (my James Boal
died 10-18-1838 or 1839) for 120 acres in Clinton Co, IN. I don't know
if this could be my James Boal or if he died and was buried (probably in
the Mitchell Cemetary) in Union Co, OH.
It would seem that if there was a flu epidemic on either Union Co, OH,
or in Delaware or Clinton CO, IN in 1838 or 39 it might help. Also if
anyone has access to Cemetary listings for Union Co, OH (especially
Mitchell Cemetary) Delaware or Clinton Co, IN would appreciate a lookup
for James Boal (Boals, Bole, Boles, Bowl, Bowls) and wife Margaret Jane
Mitchell Boal. James Boal was a member of Darby Seceder Presbyterian
Church, Unionville,
Darby Township, Union County, Ohio Session Record Book, 1826-1878 (GEN
F497 .U5 R624 1985x) and helped father-in-law Judge David Mitchell with
the initial church sessions in Judge Mitchell's orchard. Would really
appreciate a lookup here. Maybe there is an obituary - anyone know of
the newspapers of the day in that locale of Ohio or Indiana?
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Steve

Diane,
I just found out that a relative was buried in Garden of
Memory. I called yesterday to find out where her
plot was, since I'm out of state. The people there were extremely
nice. They also looked up her husband and daughter for me, even
though I wasn't sure they were there, and gave me the dates of death
so I can order the death certificates. They also have copies of
obits for many of the people, too.
Also, I have gotten a few Indiana death certicates thru the
VitalChek system. I first try to find "likely suspects" thru the
Social Security Death Index to try to find dates, to narrow the
search. In another case I was desperate and had them do a 10 year
search, and they still found who I was looking for. They can be
pricey, though. But if you're really stuck, you might give
them a try.
Good luck.

Looking for information on James Boal (b. 1789 in PA) and (m. 3-7-1814 in
Madison Co, parent county of Union, OH) Margaret Jane Mitchell (b. 1794
in PA) who reportedly, Beers- History of Union County, Ohio, departed
with family to Indiana about 1828-1830 where he died (both died after
having influenza for seven days 10-18-1838 or 1839-Boal family Bible).
Although this surname was "BOAL" I have seen the following variations in
spelling of the name: Boals, Bole, Boles, Bowl, Bowls. There may be
others I have not yet encountered.
The reason I suspect Delaware Co, or Clinton Co, Indiana is that I just
recently found a reference from the Bureau of Land management for land
purchase (patent) by "James Boal" of Delaware Co, Indiana on 5-15-1837
for 120 acres in Clinton Co, IN.

Of those family members listed above it is known that George Mitchell
Boal and wife Susannah Louise Mills also moved to Indiana prior to moving
to Knox County, IL where they were listed in the 1850 US Census.
James Boal was a Justice of the Peace (performed marriages, involved in
wills and legal transactions, etc), Road Commissioner, and held other
elected offices in Union Co, OH. He was assisted father-in-law Judge
David Mitchell of Union Co, OH with the formation of the first
Presbyterian Church in the area.
Any information which will help me locate where James Boal and Margaret
Jane Mitchell died and what other family members were in the same area
around 1830 to 1838 would be greatly appreciated.
More information that I have is available on my website:

Thank you.

Dianne,
Beech Grove is indexed at the the Special Collections and Archives at Ball
State. I don't know about the other two. Gardens of Memory is on
Highway 3 North of Muncie. The phone books lists its address as 10703 N.
State Rd. 3 and the phone number as 289-7449. Elm Ridge is at 4600
Kilgore Ave, Muncie, Phone 288-5061. It is on the west side of Muncie.
Beech Grove has been around much longer. The other two are relatively
new. We moved to Muncie in 1963 and they were both there then, but not
very large as they are today, as I recall.
Hope this helps.

I don't have the death dates for my Malinowski (Malnoski) family. I was hoping they would be in the obituary index. I called the
library, but only their son Edward was listed. I searched the online cemetery index and there not there either. John and Augusta
must be buried in one of these cemeteries: Beech Grove, Garden of Memory or Elm Ridge. Do you know if any of these cemeteries
have their records indexed? If not, I am out of luck until I can obtain their death records.
Thanks
