Message Board Post:
I would like to contact the family of my relative Mary Ellen COOK who married a man named
BLUE. In August 1938, she signed as a witness on the delayed birth certificate of her
brother John Alexander COOK. Both were born at Balsam, Ontario, Canada (she in August
1870). She signed the statement in the presence of a notary in Auburn, DeKalb County,
Indiana.
Her mother Ellen GIBSON married George Washington COOK in Ontario in 1863. Ellen GIBSON is
the half-sister of my ancestor John JOHNSTON who also came to Chicago, as did their
brother Christopher GIBSON.
Since Mary Ellen COOK was born August 1870 (in Canada), then when she signed the statement
22 August 1938 in Auburn, Indiana as Mary Ellen BLUE, she would have been 68 years old.
I was not able to find her as Mary (or Mary Ellen) BLUE in the 1930 DeKalb County, Indiana
census. So I suspect she may have been a widow when she married Mr. BLUE and that they
married sometime between 1930 and 1938.
The COOK family had come to Chicago about 1881, and Mary Ellen's brother John
Alexander COOK and his wife Fanny appear in Chicago in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930
Censuses. They had moved to the far south side of Chicago by 1910.
