INFLUENZA-PNEUMONIA CLAIMS FOURTH VICTIM
Four Children in Family Die Within Eighteen Hours; Physician Called Too Late.
THREE MAY RECOVER
Lagrange, Ind., Jan. 22.--Chauncey, 24, and Elsie, 23, children of Mr. and Mrs. John Cross
of Mongo, Ind., died early yesterday morning of influenza pneumonia. Mary, age 15, died
at 8 o'clock and another sister died at twelve last night of the same malady. A four
year old daughter, a seventeen year old son, and the mother, three other members of the
family stricken with the same malady, are seriously ill but hopes are entertained of their
recovery.
It was not known that the Cross family was ill until a call came here at four o'clock
yesterday for a physician. Dr. C. H. Schenk went hurriedly to the Cross home, but one
patient was dead when he arrived and the second died a few minutes after.
The Cross family adhere to the faith of the "Saints" it is said, and refused to
call a physician for the children. Neighbors claim the father can be heard in the barn
praying for his family to be healed.
Funeral services for Chauncey and Elsie were held yesterday afternoon and the two girls
who died last night will be buried today.
Miss Edna Yoder, Red Cross nurse is at the Cross home caring for the family.
