Charles Theodore Smith was born the 22d day of Janaury, 1840, in York township, Sandusky
Co., State of Ohio, the son of David and Hannah (Ames) Smith. He enlisted when a young man
in the Civil war October 14, 1861, Company F of the 2d Michigan Cavalry, at Grand Rapids,
Michigan, as a private. The regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2d Division Army of
the Cumberland. Mr. Smith acted as Commisary Sargeant. After March 1864 till the close of
the war, he was present and actively engaged with his regiment in the battle [of] New
Market, siege of Corinth, Mississippi, and Iuka, Mississippi. At the battle of Pittsburg
Landing he was taken sick and went home for four months. Rejoining his regiment he took
part in the battles of the Peninsula, and in all of the engagements of his regiment at
that time. He was a second time taken sick and was ill two months, but recovered in time
to take part in the battle of Chickamauga, Danvill, Mossy Creek. He then veteranized
[re-enlisted] a!
nd afterwards took part in the battle of Nashville, Tennesee, which reulted in the
repulse of Hood and the breaking up of his army. After that the regiment remained all
winter at Waterloo [prob. Waterloo Tennesee]. Having served three years and eleven months,
he was discharged at Jackson, Michigan, having served his country faithfully. Then on Dec.
30, 1867 he married Josie Phalen, who was born in Ireland in 1847. To this union were born
four children, Frank, Fredrick, Courtland, Luisa. Frank and Fred having preceded him in
dath and Courtland and Luisa's place of residence unknown. And then on Dec. 29, 1891
he was again married to Eve Saxfreud. To them were born triplet babies, of which all died
at birth. He leaves his loving wife and 2 children to mourn their loss. The funeral
service was held from the U. B. [United Brethren] church, Sunday Afternoon at 2
o'clock, E. R. Kennsey, director. Burial at Newville.
