Hi Ron,
Thanks for emailing me. Below is the citation from Dekalb County. It shows Lester
Cobler marrying Laura Layman. This likely occurred about 1880. As you can see, no
outcome is listed for them. Her mother is my gg-grandfather's sister Susan Fetter
Layman. If you are related to this couple I can provide their kin in both directions in
the Fetters, not so much among Layman. If you are not related but have information of
their children, etc., I would love to have it.
Dan
a.. Philip Layman married Susan Fetters. To this union were born five children: George,
Israel, Sadie, Laura, and Maude. They lived on the farm on County Road 60. Philip, his
wife, and Lew, a cousin, are all buried in the Bear Creek Cemetery in Jackson Township.
George was united in marriage to Allie Leora Woodring. They built a house west of the
old home place and they lived there until George died. George and Allie were the parents
of two children: Guy and Lola. Guy married Edna Hook. They had a store in West Unity,
Ohio, until his health failed. They then moved back to Auburn. Guy died in 1985, and Edna
is still living.
Lola married Forrest Beaty and they had four children: Naomi married Howard Alwood, and
they live near St. Joe. They have a son, John, who is married and lives in Auburn. They
have a daughter, Carolyn, married to Gerry Humbarger. They have two sons: Greg and Brian,
both at home. Chalmer, married Mary Ellen Rude and are the parents of seven children:
Sharon, Larry, Sue, Dan, Rick, Dawn, and Brenda. Chalmer is known as Mike. He and Mary
Ellen live in St. Joe. Lola and Forest had twins, who died in infancy. Forrest worked at
Auburn Auto for a number of years and at General Electric during the War. After George
died, Forrest and Lola and their family moved to the farm and Allie lived with them for
the remainder of her life.
Israel lived on the family farm all his life. He was united in marriage to Rosela Morr.
They were the parents of two daughters: Gladys married Fred Hull. She now lives in
Defiance, Ohio, and Bessie Zeigler lives in Elkart, Indiana.
Laura married Lester Cobler and they live in Auburn.
Sadie married William Farmer and lives in Jackson Township.
Maude married Charlie McCosh and they lived in Indiana for a while, then moved to
Michigan, where they lived the remainder of their lives. They had one daughter, Hazel, and
two sons, Harry and Harold.
Lewis Layman, a cousin, had two daughters: Lula and Lucretia. Lula lived in Nebraska and
Lucretia lived in Anderson, Indiana. In later years, Lew lived by himself on Uncle
Israel's farm. He cut hair for all of the men that lived around the neighborhood.
Uncle Henry, a brother of Philip and Aunt Mary Layman lived on a farm close to the church
which was called "Sawdust Church." They are buried in the cemetery back of the
church, which is known as Mt. Pleasant.
