Martha Sophia Mitchell Stebing
AUBURN WOMAN IS DEAD AT AGE OF 61
Mrs. Michael Stebing Died at Her Home Friday Evening After an Illness of a Year and a
Half
Mrs. Martha S. Stebing, age 61, wife of Michael Stebing of 1516 South Sprott street,
Auburn, died at her home about 7:30 p.m. Friday after an illness of a year and a half. She
had been seriously ill and mainly confined to her bed for the past six weeks.
Mrs. Stebing succumbed to a coronary occlusion.
Born in Auburn on Feb. 4 1894, she was the daugher of Mr. and Mrs. George Mitchell of the
Auburn Junction. She resided in the Auburn area most of her lifetime.
She and Mr. Stebing were married in Auburn 41 years ago.
Surviving besides her parents and husband are seven daughters, Mrs. May Reid of Genoa, O.,
Mrs. Betty Baker and Mrs. Barbara Luke of Butler, Mrs. Patricia Henderson of Elkhart, Mrs.
Mary Ellen Brown of 914 East First street, Auburn, Mrs. Emma Reeder of near Auburn and
Miss Mina Stebing, at home; seven sons, Harry of Rt. 2, Newaygo, Mich., George and Dorsey
of 1613 Sprott street, Auburn, John of 1920 South Wayne street, Auburn, Roy of Ft. Wayne,
Clarence of Genoa and James of near Auburn; three sisters, Mrs. Dade Guinn of Auburn
Junction, Mrs. Mina Carper and Mrs. Ellen McDonald, both of Auburn Junction; four
brothers, John Mitchell of Altona, Charles Mtichell, also of the Auburn Junction, James
Mitchell of near Auburn and Henry Mitchell of Garrett; 21 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
The body was removed to the Dilgard & Cline funeral home in Auburn for burial
preparations.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev.
Joseph Ferguson of near Auburn officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn cemetery in
Auburn.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 p.m. tonight.

MICHAEL STEBING DEAD AT AGE OF 80
Native of Germany and Resident of Auburn for More than 75
Years Succumbs at Garrett Convalescent Home
Michael Stebing, age 80, a native of Germany who had resided in the Auburn community for
more than 75 years, died at 7:10 a.m. Friday in the Garrett Convalescent home.
Mr. Stebing was the father of 14 children, 13 of whom are living.
The body was removed to the Dilgard & Cline funeral home in Auburn where friends may
call after 10 a.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday with the
Rev. Joseph Ferguson of east of Auburn officiating.
Burial will follow in Roselawn cemetery near Auburn.
Mr. Stebing's death was attributed to complications of age. He had been blind for
nearly 15 years but his general health remained good until he entered the Barkley
Convalescent home in Butler last August. On Oct. 23, he was admitted to the Sanders
hospital in Auburn and on Nov. 16 was transferred to the convalescent home in Garrett.
Mr. Stebing was a former employee of the Auburn Stoker Division of Auburn Foundry, Inc. He
retired about 15 years ago when his eyesight failed.
A native of Germany, he was born Sept. 1, 1880 in Hessen Castle, Germany. He came to the
United States with his family in 1883. His wife, the former Martha Mitchell, died in 1955.
The late family residence was at 1516 Sprott street, Auburn.
Since 1955, Mr. Stebing had resided with his children.
Surviving are 13 children, Mrs. May Reed of Genoa, O; George J. Stebing of 1613 Sprott
street, Auburn; Roy Stebing of Fort Wayne; Clarence Stebing of Genoa; Dorsey Stebing,
Cedarville, Ind.; James Stebing, Rt. 3, Auburn; Mrs. Betty Baker of Montpelier, O.; Mrs.
Emma Reeder, Rt. 2, Auburn; Mrs. Patricia Henderson, Elkhart; John Stebing, 1920 South
Wayne street, Auburn; Mrs. Mary Ellen Brown, Waterloo; Mrs. Barbara Luke, now in Italy
with her husband who is stationed there in military service, and Miss Mina Stebing of
Montpelier, O.
A son, Harry Stebing, preceded him in death three years ago. Also surviving are two step
brothers, John Dosch of south of Auburn and Perry Stebing of near Auburn.
[my notes....John Dosch and Perry Stebing were not Mike's step brothers. John Dosch
was Mike's brother, the youngest child of Mike's parents, George Stiebing
(Stebing) and his 1st wife. Perry was Mike's half-brother, a child of George Stiebing
and his 2nd wife, Augusta Sodtman Peters.]
