On our Lookup page (DeKalb Web Page) you will find the name and email of Kate Birdseye.
She is the librarian at Garrett. She was formerly the head of the Allen County Genealogy
Department at Fort Wayne. She is building a genealogy department in Garrett. I would
suggest that you email her and see if she has the obits, or any other information on the
family that you are researching? Let her know that you are planning on attending the
county for research.
Auburn Library does not have the Garrett papers. Garrett does have the period of time
that you are looking for.
At the present, the Auburn library has more in genealoty than the other three libraries in
the County.
Please feel free to email me, if I can be of assistance to you, prior to your vist.

Hi all,
eHoping to talk mom into getting out to DeKalb to do more research soon.
Trying to prepare a bit before going because it will be another 1 day trip
(Takes about 3 hours there, 3 hours back, doesnt leave much daytime to
search).
Anyway, I was wondering what paper would be the best to look for:
Obit of Henry LUMM d. Jan 30, 1920 Garrett
" of Martha Ann LUMM d. Jan 27, 1954 Garrett
" of James Albert MOORE d. Oct 12, 1941 Garrett
Here in Lake county IN there are two main newspapers, but the Times is better
for the city of Hammond, and the Post Tribune is better for anything that
happened in Gary. They both also cover all of other towns, but if someone
died in Hammond...the Post wouldnt be your best bet...the Times would be.
Even though the towns are right next to each other and both cover towns that
are 20 miles south of them....there is still a preferred paper for your
search area. This is especially true for the earlier years.
Is it like this in Garrett as well?? Is there a "better" paper to find
information for Garrett? Will I be wasting an hour if I search in the wrong
paper for the above obits? I am trying to avoid mass confusion like the last
time I got down there. We spent most of our visit finding where we had to go.
Though that was a few years ago and I have learned a LOT since.
Any help greatly appreciated. Or if you know of someone who does obituary
copies for people, at a small fee, I may be willing to do that to save myself
some time...then I will have obits in hand, with all of their clues, when I
get to Dekalb.
Thanks!
Kathy
