I grew up near Butler and went to high school there. I don't recall hearing of an
insane asylum in Butler. There may have been one in DeKalb County, but there are no large
buildings in or near Butler that would be asylum-like. Have you talked to any old-timers
in the area?

Here's my skeleton and brick wall, all in one!
I'm wondering if anyone out there has more info on the poor asylum in DeKalb
county? I'm looking for information on Julia DeVore and her son James Moore
who were listed there at various times thru 1876-1880.
James Moore was my mom's grandfather, his mother was Julia Devore born about
1855.
Family "story" is that Julia came from a wealthy family in France, but that
she had gotten pregnant out of wedlock so they sent her to the US to 'save
the family name'. I dont buy it for a minute! James Moore's father
is listed as
John Moore...not a French name. From what my mom recalls, he didn't speak
French...a young and alone mom just sent here, probably would've
talked to her
small child in French. And the asylum records (on the Genweb site) list her
nationality as United States.
I think the whole story about the wealthy French family was to lighten the
blow on the 'bastard' child, which in his adult years, he admitted to being
quite often! There were a few John Moore's in DeKalb county, some
even prominent
citizens...can't help but to wonder if one could be my gggrandfather!?
For Julia DeVore I can't find a birth, or death...she had to have died in
DeKalb county. Was she here in the 1860 or 1870 census?
James Albert Moore born 2 Mar 1872 at: Butler, DeKalb Co., IN
Also, does anyone know WHERE the asylum was...if so, would it have been in
Butler where the "old folks home" was that my mom went to in Butler? My mom
thought it would be so strange to find out that she had visited the place that
used to be the poor asylum that her grandfather basically grew up in.
She's 75 and would really like to solve the mystery of Julia Devore.
