Irene Krieger <ikrieger(a)seidata.com>, President of the Tri-County
Genealogical Association which covers Decatur, Ripley and Franklin
Counties, has sent me clarification on the 1870 census index:
It's unlikely that we would put the 1870 Census on the web because the
IGS is putting them on a CD. The whole state will be alphabetized on
the CD. The extracting we did is not alphabetized. We were instructed
to print them in the order in which they came. We were not to put
persons under the age of 18, unless they were in a household with a
different last name. Because of that researchers must still look on the
micro-film. We know it's possible for a few persons who were either born
after 1852 or for some reason missed the 1860 census who married, had a
child, and died before the 1880 census and be missed out altogether -
especially a female ancestor.
Russell Wilhoit <rwilhoit(a)hsonline.net> who, with Irene, indexed the three
counties, has indicated that he is willing to do lookups from the 1870
Decatur census if a township and, preferably, the local area is specified.
