Subject: [BS-L] Qualification request
Dear Blacksheep Society,
I think my GGG Grandfather was a blacksheep of the family due to this
story.
My GGG Grandfather, George Washington Hollis was married to Margaret
Clarissa Donnell on 30 Apr 1857 in Decatur CO, IN..They had 9 children.
Martin B. 20 March 1858, Thomas B. 10 May 1859, Milton Ambrose 1 Jun 1861,
Luther A. 6 March 1863, Owen and Olley 20 Oct 1867, Cora Alice 28 Jun 1869,
Lizzie Belle 23 Feb 1870, Joseph D 5 Feb 1873.
He stepped out on her and got a std according to an paper in his Civil War
record. They ended up moving to Missouri..and since he was abusive to her,
also documented in his civil war records, she took the younger children and
moved back to Indiana, moving in with a married son in Indianapolis.
Sometime after this George Washington Hollis married again to Lydia(?) in
Kansas City,MO on 8 Jan 1878. Mind you he never got a divorce from the first
wife..He and second wife had 5 children, named Oliver M.-born @1879; George
W.-born @ 1881; Mabel A.-born @1884; Albert H.-born @1886 and Margaret E.
The reason the information about the std (sexually transmitted disease)
and the fact about this second family was in the civil war records of him
was that after George died his first wife, Margarte applied for the widows
pension. And since they never divorced she felt she was entitled to it. In
the records it was brought up over and over again asking if they ever got a
divorce. It was proven that she didn't and she was so awarded the widow
pension by the government. George Washington Hllis, born 1 May 1833, in
Lancaster Co, Pa to Thomas ans Sarah Ann (Speer) Hollis. He was a Captain
during the Civil War.
The where abouts and descendants of this second family of his with Lydia,
continues to elude me. I would have never found this information if I hadn't
have sent off for the military records. George Washington Hollis is the
first Black sheep of the family I have found....so far. ~grins~
Sincerely Yours,
Jennifer Trowbridge Uppencamp <jenuine_1(a)hotmail.com>
