Karen,
Thanks much. I have printed your instructions and will cross my fingers
when I click on copy/export something. I remember quite a few years ago
when I tried that for someone and discovered they received family group
sheets for everybody in that line, but my own file was gone! I had to go to
a back-up file to recover all the information I no longer had!
After I had sent my previous message to you I found your instructions
also were on the Franklin Co IN list, and I guess I should have replied
there. Sounds like you are going to have a worthwhile project here.
Marian

Marian,
We don't have any rules or guidelines for the GEDCOM files, but I think
they
should include as many people as possible so they will be useful to
as
many
researchers as possible. The idea is that someone will look at your
file
and maybe find a connection between your family and theirs...and will
contact you so you both will gain. I'm submitting my entire file of 8,000
names. They weren't all in Franklin County, but they're all connected to
Franklin County--even if it's only because they're my ancestors.
A GEDCOM file is something different than a report; it is a standard
format
that can be read by most genealogy programs. It can't be read in
any
meaningful way by a word processor such as Word or Wordperfect, but
genealogy programs will read it and preserve all the relationships between
people, facts, dates, etc. I much prefer that you send your file in
GEDCOM
format.
I gather you're using Family Tree Maker, so here are the directions for
creating a GEDCOM file with that program:
1. Pick File, then Copy/Export Family File
2. The first thing it asks you for is a file name. Name it mdunlap (to
match your email address,) but before you click on Save:
a. Go up to the top box which says "Save in" and click on the little arrow
at the right hand end of the white box. Pick Desktop.
b. Underneath where you typed mdunlap, there's a box labeled "Save as
type." It also has a little arrow. Click on the arrow and pick GEDCOM
(*.GED) Now click on Save.
3. There will next be a small box that pops up. Leave all the settings
in
this box just as they are, and click OK.
You have now created a GEDCOM file, and you will have an icon on your main
desktop screen. Attach this file to an email message sent to me at
karenc(a)thepoint.net, and you're all set.
PDF files are good, and you're correct that they preserve the format of
the
report. But they can only be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader, and not
everyone
has this program. Also, the information in a PDF file can't be
directly
revised. A PDF file is really just a "picture" of the report.
Does any of this make sense? I hope my directions are clear enough that
you
can create a gedcom to send. If you still have questions, please
write me
again. I'll do my best to answer!
Karen
P.S. I'm sorry I didn't reply the first time. Your message must have
come
while I was on vacation, and I was a bit overwhelmed when I got back.
I
had
over 2,000 messages to read! I hope this will help make up for my
rudeness.

Early on when this project was discussed I asked a question or two but
have
never seen a response. I wanted to know if you are wanting a family
"line",
and if so, how far back and how far down you want the generations--or
are
you wanting merely the family as found in Franklin Co records. I am in my
mid-80's and if I knew as much about computers as I know about genealogy I
would know exactly what you want when you say you want a GedCom file. You
mention Family TreeMaker and that it will form more than one kind of
report.
Today it can export in PDF, which for sure doesn't mess up the
format of
something and supposedly can be read by almost any computer. For instance
a
descendancy chart forwarded in Word loses format but when exported in
PDF
stays complete. A Generation Report shows that it can be changed to
GedCom,
but again--please, exactly what do you want submitted--and please
don't
simply say again you want a GedCom file. My two family lines there were
intermarried and weren't in Franklin County for too many years, so my
report
could be pretty brief or I can take both lines back to the immigrant
ancestor and a generation or two after they were no longer in Franklin Co.
HELP!!!!!!!
Marian
