The Indianapolis Star currently has on its website an interesting set
of resources on African-American history in Indiana, and included is
a story of the underground railroad in Decatur County under the
heading of "Hoosier farmer gave costly help to fleeing slave and her
children." The website is at

Harding devotes ten pages to this story in Chapter XVII of his
History of Decatur County (1915) and there is a further account at pp
13-15 of the Atlas of Decatur County (1882) which, I'm sorry to
report, lists my ggfather Philip Ballard as one of the members of the
convicting jury.
