I'm sorry to have been slow the past few months in putting new
information on the Decatur County pages. I've been away a good bit,
and I'm off overseas next Thursday for a fortnight, but I'll then
stay put.
I've just gone through all the links (except the many on the family
genealogy webpages page) and removed or replaced those that were
broken. I'm always grateful for information on any of the links that
are not functioning.
We have a couple of new resources: Marti Couch has been added to the
list of those willing to look up records and obituaries in Greensburg
and Kathy Ross will share her Mozingo family information. If you
have extensive materials on Decatur County families and are willing
to help others working on them there's plenty of space to list you as
well. This is separate from the family genealogies that are online
and also from surnames on which your information is still in short
supply; for the latter you do best to post a query on the Decatur
County queries pages.
Lora Addison Radiches has offered to transcribe records and
biographies for Decatur County, comparable to the enormous number
she's done for Shelby and Rush Counties, and there will shortly be a
further announcement on this.
Many people have complained about the new format of Rootsweb/Ancestry
queries pages, incorporating obituaries, biographies, etc. I agree
with the criticisms, but I've arranged the links from Biographies and
Obituaries on the Decatur home page to select these from among all
the queries. Perhaps this will encourage members of the list to
submit further entries. We've had so very few Bible Records, Wills
and Land Records that it doesn't seem worth while linking these, but
they can be searched for with those words on the Queries page.
For those putting information on the Migrations page, you can
update/change any information on the survey. Send it to Thelma
Dwiggins <Paul_Dwiggins(a)email.msn.com>.
A search hint: you may be able to locate webpages with useful data
by using a search engine like my favorite at
www.google.com,
entering, e.g.,
ballard "decatur county indiana"
ballard "decatur co indiana"
and various permutations. As with many search engines, you can enter
phrases like "decatur co indiana" by enslosing them in "". If you
get too many irrelevant returns, you can narrow the search by adding
the word family, or genealogy or history. If you find that a page
you want to see is no longer online, you can read it anyway by
clicking on "cached" at the end of the page entry on Google's list.
If Tootie Dennis is still on the list could she please contact me
with her current e-mail address?
