Ancestry.com lists 54 James M. Adams in the Civil War (North & South). Four of them
from Indiana. One each in Company B & D of the 53rd Indiana Infantry, 1 in Company D,
145th Indiana Infantry, and 1 no company, 146th Indiana Infantry with a note 145th Ind.
Inf.
There is a 1915 book by Samuel Harding, History of Decatur County, Indiana, which contains
unit rosters. The Decatur County Library indicates they have it. The Anderson Indiana
Public Library has a paper copy of it in the Indiana Room. I have rented it on microfilm.
Your librarian should be able to find it. If not, contact me and I'll look it up.
Ancestry's Civil War Pension Index lists 31 Union names, but most of the entries
pertain to pensions for widows and minors. Ruling those out leaves 8 or 10. See if you can
narrow it down to the Company/Regiment. If you can determine where he enlisted and his
rank at enlistment or discharge that may help, too. (Although all the Hoosiers listed were
discharged as privates; one of them enlisted as a Corporal!)
Hope this helps.

I located James M. Adams in the 1900 Census, Decatur Co IN,
Washington Township. He said that he was a "pensioner". Does anyone know where
I could locate pension records from the Civil War? Would the local library have that
info? Or are there any books, etc. pertaining to Decatur Co that are out there? I know
that I can check with NARA but, I don't know in what Unit, State, etc. he served. Any
help would certainly be appreciated.
