from David Piepho, who has worked exhaustively on the Haymond family
of Decatur, Rush and Shelby Counties:
I know this building well. I worked there for three years. There are
actually two buildings. The original building 6400 E. 30th St. is the
old RCA plant. The new building 6440 E. 30th St., built in 1995-96 is
a state of the art document storage building used by State Forms
Distribution, Commission on Public Records and Bureau of Motor
Vehicles. Up until last year State and Federal Surplus used the old
building until moving to a larger facility near Indianapolis
International Airport. I am not aware of any roof leakage problem in
either building. I get out there a couple of times a year as the
Department of Transportation still has road sign and signal repair
shops there as well as a limited warehouse. I would assume that the
public access area for State Archives would be in the old building
and the storage area in the new building. They also store documents
in an underground, off site area somewhere in southern Indiana. I
have dealt with the archive folks on occasion and have found them to
be quite conscientious. I seriously doubt that they would put state
documents at risk in an inadequate facility. The State Library
building where they are presently located has some serious water
problems and they have abandoned the basement areas for this reason
and have taken over the area formerly used by the State Historical
Society (not a state agency) who moved across Ohio Street two years
ago to a new facility. My guess is that State Archives has outgrown
the State Library thus the need to relocate.
