I have seen reference to an epidemic of cholera in 1866 in
Greensburg, which killed off many people. Is anyone aware of an
account of this epidemic and how widespread it was in the county?
(It happens to fit with the disappearance of my ggfather and his
parents in St Paul and St Omer.) Although Harding's 1915 history of
the county has a chapter on the medical profession, he gives no
information on the history of public health. I know that the period
1865-73 was one of a series of recurring epidemics of Smallpox,
Cholera, Typhus, Typhoid, Scarlet Fever, Yellow Fever and Influenza
in the Eastern US and Midwest.
